ODI World Cup

Just highlights how little Afghanistan get to play the top sides more than anything.

He's only played them nations twice outside of a tournament whether that be World Cup/Asia Cup.
Yeah, I guess it does like. Hopefully this WC proves that they should get more bilateral series against the big boys.

I would like politics to be kept out of sport, and I'm not comfortable with the Taliban's influence on their game. Something definitely should be done, but what?

We ignore what the India government and BCCI do politically to the PCB, so I'm not holding my breath that the ECB step in and do something about the Taliban.
Brilliant work, again by Afghanistan. Their performances have been a real tonic in this otherwise bleak tournament.
Bang on. They bowled, fielded and batted superbly today. Massive difference to the likes of us and Paks is like night and day. They have all the application and abundance in energy that we've been missing.

I don't know if this has been mentioned at all, but according to Dobell it has just emerged that the final group table will be used to determine qualification for the Champions Trophy in 2 years time. Pakistan as hosts plus the other top 7 teams from this world cup. I didn't know this, England didn't know this, the journo's didn't know this, but seemingly the ECB were represented at the 2021 ICC meeting that decided this and they did know this.... they just didn't bother to tell anyone who perhaps needed to know.

Not like the ECB to be chuffing useless

Effectively, England need to beat Holland and Pakistan (because they won't beat Australia) and hope like hell that Pakistan finish in the top 7 to have any hope of qualifying for the Champions Trophy

@mackembhoy has also mentioned this. But is the Champions Trophy that big a deal? (I know we won it, once).

Will probably get through European qualification against France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and others. Although Ireland could prove tricky.

I just think that it's all rather embarrassing the depths to which the England ODI set up has been allowed to sink, in the blinkered and dogmatic pursuit of a new path that no other country in the world feels any need to follow them down

IIRC, the champions trophy is a straight top 8 gig and there isn't any other qualification process. I think in the past participation was determined by world ranking, but not this time

I suppose my big fear from all this is that the ECB will use it as an opportunity to say that the counties play too much cricket and they'll once more push for a 10 match county championship in order to try and squeeze in some more domestic 50 over cricket..... but not in August, of course

It's important for our next generation to play the best in prep for 2027.

It's still a trophy and one which we never won.

We've shit the bed every single time we looked like winning. So I've got them sadly burned into my brain.

2004 Windies put on a big 9th wicket partnership to win in the final against us.

2013 it became a T20 game against India in final, which we somehow fucked up even though it was low scoring.

2017 we bottled it against Pakistan in semis after winning all our group games comfortably. Who then spanked India in the final.

Will be a good test for both teams knockout credentials imo. I still think it'll be a India Australia final mind, but I hope not.

Afghans Vs Sri Lanka today. Lankans batting 1st labouring to 250+. Currently 134-3 27ovs. Afghans bowling well. Would it be another upset if they won again today? One of the highlights of the WC for me, their emergence as a proper team.

Afghanistan qualified for the finals automatically by being one of the top 8 teams in the world. Sri Lanka had to do it through the qualifiers so no fluke.
While the Afghans are impressive, it would be a shame if the game died in places like WI and SL, nice places to tour, in favour of Afghanistan. Where next, Gaza? Ukraine? ;)

Cricket it pretty much the only sport played/watched in SL, not much chance of it dying. They've just gone through a bit of a slump in the cycle of good/average players. Definitely on the up atm, won qualifiers at a canter and considering they're playing a second string bowling attack probably doing as well as can be expected.

Really good point that.
Bangladesh struggling 156-6 35ovs against Pakistan. Afridi bowling well 3-19 off his 7ovs.
Waqar made a really good point there on comms about how Afridi wasn't bowling fast enough to get it to reverse swing at 84mph. Cue next over and M.Wasim getting 2 bowled wickets at 87mph-88mph. Brilliant commentary.

That's what I like to see from the experts. Offering insight that the normal fan wouldn't be privy to. I like Waqar, remains neutral most of the time and tries not to talk in jingo. And like the example above, knows his onions.

Well said. If it happens for us, it seems likely we would go with a largely unproven side, supplemented by a few older heads. It would be the One Day Cup writ large, but this could be a good thing.

That 2017 final is well remembered for me. Pakistan have an atrocious record against India in the WC's so that hammering in the CT final lives long in the memory. Restricting the great Indian T20 team to 160 in their 20ovs was no mean feat then knocking them off with ease for a 10 wicket win, in front of their own fans believe? Babar and Rizwan were brilliant that night.

Agreed about the rest though, I like the tournament. Its always one I wish we'd taken more seriously over the years.

It's alright marra, mind plays tricks at our age. I thought some spinner was making their debut earlier and turns out he's been around for years. Not just that, he's a franchise superstar ,:D
was what I was thinking of. England did win the Akai Singer Champions Trophy, in Sharjah, back in 1997. This is the cup they all wanted to win.
Anyway, I'm glad that England have to struggle to qualify for the lesser Champions Trophy. It will breathe a bit of life into these ostensibly dead fixtures.

Having the T20 WC finals every two years with 20 teams has rendered the Champions Trophy pretty much to the margins tbh. The constant chopping and changing of reasons why it's held, the format, qualifying criteria etc haven't helped either.

It was originally held to develop /encourage the game in second tier nations but they're pretty much excluded now (hosting and playing).
