The Safety of Fans in the North Stand

Loads of extra stewards on the sponsor boards in the north tonight. Must have been worried people were going to gan on the pitch.

Not that they would have been able to stop anyone like.

Apparently they were there to purely watch the away fans and help identify areas of stuff was chucked. That’s what I was told anyway

There were a lot more stewards it seemed to me, and they seemed to actually be doing things at the entrance to the north stand and a sniffer dog was active when I passed …. but Huddersfield Town have hardly got the worst reputation have they?

All clubs have their nutters so there needs to be consistency but next season we might be looking at the likes of Everton, Leeds or Forest on top of Cardiff, Millwall and Birmingham

… so then to repeat - the current safety measures to stop dangerous objects being thrown from the north upper tier look woeful to me

I cannot understand why not just grasp the nettle and put up a net

Fair summary, Security officer not sleeping according to Barnesy, this ain't going away🤔
Only right as well.
Inaction and arrogance has led to this.
It was mentioned in one of the threads that the North Stand Lower should be classed as a hard hat zone, SO37 or RAWA should put the feelers out to any PPE companies or do a crowd fund to get a couple of thousand hard hats put on the seats....if nothing else but to highlight the problem to the cameras, they wont like it
The security officer pulled a card display (meaning materials couldn't be taken in). There's no chance he's letting hardhats into the ground en masse, especially when it shows him and the club up 😂

They'll need to look at some option or other mind. Their reasoning for not needing the net was because there'd been less missiles since they started the "enhanced" measures. Now it's been proven that those measures aren't effective, and they've chosen not to move away fans, they'll need some sort of a solution. They've never mentioned the cost of net maintenance, although that doesn't mean it isn't a factor, but regardless they can't expect to just go on as normal.

Without wanting to tempt fate they're probably lucky that this one will be a fairly low risk fixture, but something will happen again either tonight or in the future so they can't just put their heads in the sand
Thought the most telling thing from Barnes chat with Steve Neil was the ratio of stewards to away fans being 1 to every 250 fans, when the industry standard is generally 1 to 60. Club saying they can't fill the roles.

Radio Newcastle on the way to the match.

  • Sheffield United are getting shot of their net apparently as it collects all kind of crap. Ruling a horizontal net out as one at the SoL for similar reasons (and would need to be bigger than Brammal Lane's net anyway).
  • A vertical net isn't an option as they'll need to abseil to maintain it. And it won't stop coins.
  • Moving people isn't an option.
  • Edit - They suggested they were looking into clubs bringing their own stewards. At the moment we have 1 steward for about 250 fans. The number should be 1 for 60. Apparently.

To me moving people is the only option really. Or they could end up moving people in stretchers or worse.

If the club had any sense at all, they would plan in moving the away fans and installing some rail seating at the same time.

Install the rail seating in a different part of the ground (Not the south stand), south standers will all want to move to wherever the rail seating is leaving the south stand free for away fans.

Job done.
Don't talk sense mate. The club won't want that catching on.

Typical club whitewashing going on again. Abseiling is not needed to maintain the net. Many other clubs maintain a vertical net without the need to abseil. Indeed, how the hell would one be expected to maintain a net under tension whilst hanging from the roof by a rope?

If only someone had invented some kind of retraction device that would allow this to be done whilst standing on probably the north stand upper with the net no longer tensed…

Moving is an option, but it costs money

So a net isn't an option basically. And moving fans isn't an option. They make it sound like they've run out of options. They could easily move fans at a cost. They are just pissing me off every single time I hear word from them.

This was mentioned on our bus last night, if Donald was still running the show we’d be in uproar over this. I think KLD seems to be getting off lightly over this, the buck stops with him.

Didn't help when one of the Stewards was seen in a video watching the match, when the goal went in

Another game, more missiles thrown down on to the Sunderland fans in the North Stand.

Coventry fans once again showing themselves up after acting all innocent in the build up to the game.

We need action to prevent this from happening again.

Coventry should get zero allocation when they next visit. It’s every time with them.
I've just seen a petition doing the rounds to get them moved.
