Bilbao Black Cats / Athletic Club Bilbao

No worries mate. If I find out last minute there's a Spanish channel showing it, I'll send you a message.

I would sort something out but I've got a family arrangement Sunday morning and I'll only get back in time for kick off.
Can’t say fairer, once more, much appreciated

Fred Pentland from Sunderland also had something to do with the founding of the club

Their fanbase gets a lot of plaudits
Athletic mention links to Sunderland on their website.

*Arthur Pentland should have said
That Pentland was from the Midlands, not Sunderland unfortunately. I was in the Mames earlier this year and Sunderland is mentioned at the Museum -sailors from Sunderland played a team from Bilbao in 1889, the article was from the Sunderland Echo. Athletic sports shops (popular at the time) are also mentioned in the museum from the Grainger Market in Newcastle and Fawcett street in Sunderland.

The match in 1889 was between English sailors. However, one team was established and known as Barmston Rangers, which I'm trying to find out more information on and the other team consisted of sailors of different steam ships, one of them being the SS Dawdon registered in Sunderland and probably takes its name from Dawdon Colliery in Seaham.

Interesting -I know there's little evidence the red and white stripes are linked to Sunderland, but maybe, that game and the links forged through that game-the shipbuilding links etc - and the fact Sunderland were one of the top sides in England-and therefore the world-at that time, might give the theory some legs. I'd like to think so, I've always had a huge admiration for Athletic Bilbao.

The Southampton shirt link is too easy a link to make as that's where the ship from Bilbao docked at.

However, Southampton were only a regional team at that time so perhaps not professional whereas we were one of the biggest teams in England.

From what I've seen of the shirt designs of the 3 clubs from that time, Athletic's shirts look much similar to ours than Southampton's.

Needs a bit more investigating which we're determined to do and re-establish and strengthen links we feel have been forgotten.

When you say "Athletic sports shops", are you referring to a particular brand or just sports shops in general?

I think it's more the mags trying to form a fake bond linked to their UEFA cup game nearly two decades ago.

This 👆

For Newcastle, this "special" bond consists of getting drunk with locals and losing at San Mamés 😂
You'd think a club like Bilbao wouldn't want anything to do with a club ran by a dictator, after what Franco did to them.

Social media guys probably obliged to tweet the flag picture.
It's definitely as much from the Bilbao side. That's why I was surprised so many off here were wanting to be part of it.
It's not really

I've followed a number of Athletic fan accounts on twitter for years including Pentland Club, Aupa Athletic, and they're both all over this relationship things with the mags. Sick of it all over my timeline today to the point I've unfollowed both accounts. Childish I know but fuck'em, no time for any club that have love-ins with them lot.
