What is your credit score?

My ex wife fucked my credit 4 years ago resulting in 3 ccjs I didn't even know about after she took credit cards and store cards out iny name. She was paying until we split up and didn't pay a penny! Police involved and everything but said they couldn't prosecute because of lack of evidence! My word against hers! So it's shite at the moment but another 3 years and the defaults and ccjs won't show anymore and hopefully I can build it back up.

The more money you have in the bank the more you can get credit regardless of your rating. Having lots of money helps.

Youd be surprised.

My first attempt to try & do a bit of stoozing when rates were about 5%.
I had no debt, decent amount in savings.
I went to bank where my savings were & they would only give me their credit builder card with a £500 limit & high rate.

Took on a new mortgage, had another go (with now less in the bank), got cards galore with decent credit limits with 0% rates.

It just goes to show how a credit rating can be easily overcome.

But it's not summat you need to worry about if you're rich anyway.

FWIW I've got a mate who owns a £400k house outright but got turned down by his bank when he went for an unsecured loan to buy a car. Absolutely no credit history at all for years.

If you're clever you can use cheap debt to make you even more richer.

Your above example is why it's best just to keep a small balance on your mortgage ticking over instead of paying it off.

My mam was refused a current account with First Direct last month (as M&S bank disbanding current accounts to concentrate on credit apparently) because she didnt have a credit history. Old fashioned living with my dad being the only one working and everything was in his name. Lloyds and Halifax were happy to giver an account. Obviously down to algorithms

HSBC group have a bit of a reputation for strict criteria.

Dunno if they use online banking but Halifax / Lloyd's is more user friendly anyway. So possibly dodged a bullet cos FD is a right pain in the arse to set up.

Halifax account sorted by going into branch and doing it the old fashioned way and also without any photo ID either. And first foray into mobile banking app too, which ironically will be a pain the arse for me every time something doesn't work "properly"

Mine is absolutely fucked after someone stole my identity to apply for numerous current accounts and credit cards last month.

Hoping it'll all be cleared from my report by the end of the year.
Going through that sounds like an absolute ball ache mind.
