England v New Zealand (2nd test)

Spot on and I've said this for years

Theres a bit of that combined with a bit of new fangled thinking about batting technique (probably driven by data and lines on a graph) and surfaces at county level being seamer friendly. All of that is having a negative impact on batting and quality spin bowling.
Wood also made over 70 runs when batting, better than some of our top order “batsmen” combined.

Him and Stone have simple batting techniques. They batted well according to their ability on what is a very good surface.

All of this reminds me of the words of Clive Lloyd when his classic Windies side thrashed us: 'They gave us a run for our money'. This whole thing has been a stroll for New Zealand.

What do you suggest
Exactly what I've said for years.... Show some respect to red ball cricket. We are a bang average test side and the talent pool is very shallow due to the neglect of the red ball game. Can't see it changing anytime soon whilst they attempt to create an obsession with The Hundred. These red ball cricketers are obsessed now with one day/T20 styles in red ball cricket and it's horrendous to watch. It is what it is I guess but I find England to be a very average test side.

The thing is, NZ genuinely gave us a sniff last test with a very generous declaration. That was our best chance of a victory and we didn’t even attempt to put them under pressure. They comprehensively out played us prior to the rain in that test and have continued that throughout this test. The gulf in quality, temperament and mindset between the two sides is vast.

As I've just said..... The obsession is now with The Hundred, which is unfortunate for the red ball game in this country. Players now just want to whack it out the ground regardless of the ball colour, we haven't got many batsman who you could say "they could always dig in when we needed". Many moons back I could name loads. I suppose money talks and players chase the lucrative contracts with the IPL for example

Do you not think there’s room for all formats?

The ECB could regulate the quality of pitches in the FC game far more robustly. Some of the scores in the county championship in recent weeks have been more club cricket than the professional game. Lots of sub 100 totals suggests counties aren’t doing their best to help produce batsmen. The contest between bat and ball doesn’t seem equal.

Agree - There was a better pitch prepared for a Durham Second XI T20 match at the Riverside last week than there was for the visit of Essex in the County Championship.
