England v New Zealand (2nd test)

The replacements haven’t done badly mind. They seem to have a really strong set of players at the moment New Zealand. Every one of their batsmen just look like quality

Their batsmen just look very organised. No quirky techniques, batting on middle and leg, knowing where their off stump is, leaving balls in the corridor and putting the bad balls away. They keep it simple and it reaps rewards.

We’ve got two lads at the top of the order who look like they’re batting whilst undergoing electroshock treatment, a number 3 and 5 who take guard at silly point and a wicket keeper batsman at 7 who is sweeping the ball onto his stumps with his head wobbling all over and who isn’t in the top 10 keepers in the country.

Stone and Wood, two lower order batsman with regulation techniques, have scored decent runs on a good pitch. That tells its own story.

I’m not usually one for calling for apologies to supporters for performances but I think it’s merited after this performance. Root should make it his first priority in the post match interview. People have supported the side brilliantly during this test at Edgbaston and they’ve been badly let down. Given the covid context and how long people have been itching to get back to watching sport and the time and money they’ll have spent to be there this morning, the captain should apologise. To lose at home on the morning of day 4 on a very good batting surface is horrific. Probably the low point of 21st century test cricket in England.
