I’m old enough, no bad gang related violence in 1950’s. It got really bad in mid 1960’s.
Sunderland have historically had supporters in North Tyneside/Northumberland. So that’s not mags putting flags out for us. I used to drink in the Coronation club in Wallsend on a Friday afternoon when the yards came out in early 70’s and you would see Sunderland there but mainly mags.
In 74 it was a case of wanting anybody to beat the Mags. ( as now ) I can never remember either set of fans supporting the other. You used to get loads of men who would go to each home game, Roker Park and SJP each week but most that I knew supported one team - Sunderland. Newcastle was known as a terrible ground for being able to see.I also knew men in Fenham who went to both.
When Sunderland played Man Utd in March 64, in the FA cup relay, police estimated 150,000 trying to get in about 5pm.The roads from Gateshead to Sunderland were at a standstill, jam packed, also Durham to Sunderland. I was there from mid afternoon for 7-30 ko , badly crushed and never got in.Gates were locked and eventually collapsed due to pressure.
Those in the traffic queues would never make it to join the throng.
FYI I had FTM on my haversack in 1967, still got it.
 I had no idea it had been in use that long.

I was 5 in 1974 and was the only person in my Sunderland supporting family who seemed to want Liverpool to win. That was mostly because I was fascinated by Steve Heighway.
Heighway ripped the mags a new one in the final, lovely to watch. I was 23 years old, and believe me I celebrated the mags getting beat, as much as I got wrecked celebrating our 73 win. Our two most enjoyable FA cup years those, 73 (our win), and 74 (mags loss). I despised the mags just as much then as I do now. I have not mellowed with age !

WBA 1887.

I know Newcastle also lost 3 finals before winning it. So i looked into, and before Newcastle in 1974 there has been WBA, Southampton, Newcastle, both Sheffields, Huddersfield, Sunderland and Notts County.

Apart from those? Anyway Sheff Wed never wore stripes in 1966 and clubs from the turn of the 20th century changed their strips over time. How certain are you that the defeated teams worse stripes on those days?

EDIT - fair enough we wore our stripes in 1913.

TBF the mags did have a sense of humor they changed the lyrics of the Blaydon Races after this,,

"A went to wembley stadium t'was on the 4th of may
Nineteen hundred and seventy four
what a fuckin' day
we showed the scousers how to sing
we showed them how to sup
the only thing we didn't do..
was win the fuckin' cup "

I had a strip before the cup final dame as those worn in the final with the safc on a diagonal
I think I got it from Willie watsons too and definitely had it on to watch the final
That's good, so the mags didn't start it. It must have been 72 then when I had the Sunderland shirt without the badge.

And we're the obsessed ones, of course we are, they've just had a good away win at Leicester and we're the first team he thinks of, if we had a good win they would be the last ones I'd be thinking of,unless the win had a bearing on both our league positions in the same division. We're 2 divisions apart for fucksake.

Absolute freaks man, if we'd have got such a good result I'd have been too pissed to drive for a start, let alone thinking it was a good idea to rocking up at the landfill and shouting at an empty ground 😀

Exactly mate, they just wouldn't cross your mind.

Beginning to think Paul1979 is the clown that has the RTG twitter account. Sad fucker posting shite here pretending to be a thick Sunderland fan then posting it on his twitter for the Geordie goons to laugh at thinking it’s genuine. Of course the admin on here are weak as piss and wouldn’t block him.

Without a doubt mate but I've already been told he's not breaking the rules just taking the piss out of this forum and fans

They did when they were just The Wednesday.

Click on the scoreline of the respective final and then look at the match report and has a drawing of the kits the teams wore

The hatred we see today is a byproduct of the dark days of the 70s, 80s and early 90s. That’s not to say there wasn’t rivalry and the occasional flare up, but nothing on the ridiculous scale we see now

"Occasional flare up"? You mustn't have been around in the late '60s and very early '70s. The violence between the fans in those days was unbelievable - this has been discussed many times on here. Absolutely no bouncing on the spot and posturing in those days.

The animosity didn't spill over into everything else as it seems to these days. Game days were nasty in the 70s but then they were nasty whoever was playing.

There was more community among people living in Northumberland and Durham back then as they tended to work together in the same heavy industries, but maggie made sure that didnt last .
