yeah, 3rd, 6th, 2nd, 2nd
Then 4th, 3rd and 5th.

It's very good and we haven't achieved that in my lifetime. Nothing deluded about it to be fair. Whether we like it or not, they've experienced it, we haven't...sadly. But considering they've had a lot of average seasons in between, it does make it surprising how entitled many of them seem to be.
They have as many Premier League trophies as us - zero.

”challenging”? When they were 6th they were 17 points behind the leaders, when they were 5th they were 34! When we were 7th we were 23 and 33....but I dont’t recall any Sunderland fans saying we were challenging.

The two seconds, and two thirds granted but even then they were 15, 14, 7 (1996/97) and 14 points behind.

Better than us, no argument at all, but don’t buy in to this challenging bs.

They were at the very least challenging for europe and have played 200+ games in europe. We can take the piss out of them all they want but I'm yet to see Sunderland compete in Europe. It really was a poor decision not to compete in the intertoto when we were given the opportunity.

You are moving the goal posts now. We will beg to differ on this - they gambled (financially) in early nIneties and no doubt had some great weekends and European mini breaks. But thankfully, due to Man Utd and , they didn’t win a thing. They are now hamstring by this perception of “challenging” and only the mega rich Saudis will (apparently) return them to the former near misses.

They haven't played 200+ games in Europe mind.

Well whatever mate, I'm not going to count them all. It's a lot more than the number of games we've played in europe.

Yes they didn't win a thing, thankfully, but they did come close, whether they gambled or not. The Saudi's if they takeover will no doubt splash the cash and bearing in mind Leicester and West Ham are up there, it likely won't be long before they are. I just hope they don't get their wish, because they'd be unbearable.

Now we are on the same page.

My only solace is, knowing quite a bit about PIF and why they exist is that I don’t think they will splash the cash like City/PSG. But they will still be able to “challenge” for 4th to 8th.

Spot on, those claiming they won’t be bothered or that they won’t win anything are just in denial. They are unbearable as it is look at last night the players posed for a photo asthough they had won the champions league and the fans on twitter were lapping it up. Imagine what they are going to be like when they actually win something! The only thing we’ve had to look forward to in the premier league era was beating Newcastle and the cup final. If this takeover happens any local rivalry will be over we won’t get close to them.

Question for the oldies here...

People often say that SAFC - NUFC rivalry wasn’t as bad in the 50s/60s/early 70s, and I seem to recall Steve Bruce when he was SAFC manager going on about his street in wallsend having red and white flags or something for our 73 final?

If it really wasn’t as bad then, then you can imagine there might have been a sentiment of wanting a fellow NE team to win.

so my question for those old enough to remember ( I was born 74 so only ever remember the hatred from the mid 80s to the present day ) ; what did SAFC fans think about the mags being in the 74 cup final? Was there any black and white flags in Sunderland, or did any Sunderland supporters want the mags to win cos they were another NE team?

Genuinely interested to know this , just occurred to me the other day when I was reading an article about 2 mags in 74 cup final who they reckon started the replica shirt trend for adults

Can't imagine it. But I'm not old enough to comment on their history since I'm mid 30s.

If you ask me I'd want to see them bankrupt and to fold. I'd take pleasure in that. Some of their fans want us back in the premier League because they 'enjoy the derby day.' That mentality is alien to me.

I was 5 in 1974 and was the only person in my Sunderland supporting family who seemed to want Liverpool to win. That was mostly because I was fascinated by Steve Heighway.

I was coming up to 8 and a Sunderland fan. I lived in Skunk territory and at school we were all told to make rosettes, black and white ones. I refused and was allowed to make a red and white one for a teacher from Liverpool. I have a certain amount of affection for Liverpool based on them humiliating Super Mac et al (him and Pat Howard were the only ones I really hated then - Pat Howard was on the grounds I didn't like the look of him :-D)
