I was coming up to 8 and a Sunderland fan. I lived in Skunk territory and at school we were all told to make rosettes, black and white ones. I refused and was allowed to make a red and white one for a teacher from Liverpool. I have a certain amount of affection for Liverpool based on them humiliating Super Mac et al (him and Pat Howard were the only ones I really hated then - Pat Howard was on the grounds I didn't like the look of him :-D)
Where you in my class? I was 7 and 4 months short of 8 and I was also asked to make Black and white rosettes.
I said “aside from the above” and you mentioned Forest, which we should have lost.
I know mate. Good win v 2nd tier WBA though;)

Question for the oldies here...

People often say that SAFC - NUFC rivalry wasn’t as bad in the 50s/60s/early 70s, and I seem to recall Steve Bruce when he was SAFC manager going on about his street in wallsend having red and white flags or something for our 73 final?

If it really wasn’t as bad then, then you can imagine there might have been a sentiment of wanting a fellow NE team to win.

so my question for those old enough to remember ( I was born 74 so only ever remember the hatred from the mid 80s to the present day ) ; what did SAFC fans think about the mags being in the 74 cup final? Was there any black and white flags in Sunderland, or did any Sunderland supporters want the mags to win cos they were another NE team?

Genuinely interested to know this , just occurred to me the other day when I was reading an article about 2 mags in 74 cup final who they reckon started the replica shirt trend for adults

I’m old enough, no bad gang related violence in 1950’s. It got really bad in mid 1960’s.
Sunderland have historically had supporters in North Tyneside/Northumberland. So that’s not mags putting flags out for us. I used to drink in the Coronation club in Wallsend on a Friday afternoon when the yards came out in early 70’s and you would see Sunderland there but mainly mags.
In 74 it was a case of wanting anybody to beat the Mags. ( as now ) I can never remember either set of fans supporting the other. You used to get loads of men who would go to each home game, Roker Park and SJP each week but most that I knew supported one team - Sunderland. Newcastle was known as a terrible ground for being able to see.I also knew men in Fenham who went to both.
When Sunderland played Man Utd in March 64, in the FA cup relay, police estimated 150,000 trying to get in about 5pm.The roads from Gateshead to Sunderland were at a standstill, jam packed, also Durham to Sunderland. I was there from mid afternoon for 7-30 ko , badly crushed and never got in.Gates were locked and eventually collapsed due to pressure.
Those in the traffic queues would never make it to join the throng.
FYI I had FTM on my haversack in 1967, still got it.

The disputed and dissallowed Liverpool goal is here on 4 mins 50 seconds. The ball clearly comes off Alan Kennedy and should have stood. Even if it was Keegan who played the pass he was still onside.

Me da (RIP) was one of the old school that you refer, he loved his football and would go to the landfill to watch a team or a player that he liked and yes he did want all the regional teams to do well. Myself I can't abide the gravy stained gits and I am getting on a bit. I can remember the '74 Cup Final and passionately didn't want them holding "our Cup". We would have to give up the trophy but I wanted Liverpool to be the next holders.
My dad was the same. Lived in Gateshead and his entertainment, money permitting, was Saturday at the footie, including Gateshead. It was Sunderland from 71 after we moved to Shiney

A lot of the older fans who supported Gateshead in the league days, pre 1960, could not bring themselves to go to Newcastle after what happened and a lot of those people became Sunderland fans instead. Some of their offspring are still around and support Sunderland including one of my best mates who I sit next to at the SOL.

My family were never Gateshead fans though, although I am. Sunderland will always come first for me but Gateshead are my home town team.

The day of that cup final it rained.
I had a bleached section of hair.
I had coloured it with cochineal.
I had gone to London with my boyfriend.
The rain washed the cochineal out so I had pink dye running down my face.

I think I remember seeing the score of the game on one of those wooden board things with the saturday football result in paper tagged on. ( Evening News?)

Depends if they went on about the LDV vans trophy as if it was the FA cup. If so then yes

Aye relegation in 2009 was followed by average crowds of 44k and relegation in 2016 by 52k crowds in the second division.
Relegation for sunlun in mid 00s and 2017 followed by crowds of like 23k.

but aye we are the ones who flee when times are bad.
Those times weren't bad that's why (a season in the championship, winning most weeks, oh how hard it must've been ).

Many were locked into numerous years too due to season tkt deals whilst in the Premier League.

Your numbers are class mind, no denying it, but truth is you've never had it bad.

It's a Season ticket ruse by Mike.

Look at me trying to give them their European Superpower status. Its the biggest con on them he's ever done. They fall for it every time. He wants compensation that's it. Why on earth would he sell a cash cow? He's already guaranteed £100m next season without one of the scruffy bastards setting foot in the shit tip.

The Saudis walked, its been a year and not a peep from them. Its not happening no matter how much bollocks they Tweet. 😉

No love for them then, no love for them now. Wanted them to be hammered in 74 final. Working in Newcastle at the time and couldn’t wait to get into work to take the piss.
Also rivalry and hatred intense in the 70’s

Yes.

4 of us sat under the tele in the local working men's club playing cards and never watched a minute of it. It annoyed the fuck out of the dozens watching it. We even had one of the bar maids bring beers over during the game. Watching their faces made it oh so sweet a day.

I wanted em to get stuffed which they did, because they shouldn't have been there after their fans behaviour vs Forest.

I was an 11 year old in Accrington so had no Mackem bias against them.
I was exactly the same.....i had moved up to the northeast from the Nottingham area a few months after Sunderlands win in 73 .....i actually supported Forest in those days as my dad supported them and we used to go to see them play. I really liked Liverpool too.
All the kids in my class at my new school were Newcastle fans but like you i hated the way they basically cheated Forest out of the semi final......I remember the shops in North Shields being decked out in B/W and i prayed that Liverpool would win.....i remember watching the cup final build up and the game itself......it was a brilliant performance by Liverpool....the mags hardly got a kick
They also did not play a single game v a top flight side until the semi-final.

and then it was a relatively poor side ( Burnley ) .....Forest were in Div 2 at the time of the QF and it took the mags 3 games to beat them....compare that to our opponents City, Arsenal and Leeds...all very good sides

I recall people being turned off by McDonald’s arrogance and the feeling that they were riding on our coat tails and usurping our win the year before
You'd have thought he'd know better after his "10-0" comment before Hereford 😂😂

Wasn't it Keegan who was offside?

Firstly Rafa also had Almiron he f***ing signed him.

Secondly you're back to waffling on about what he did at other clubs, and yes we know all about Bruce.

Why don't you compare their respective records at Newcastle? There's nothing in it. So why is one adored and one hated?
He had Almiron for six months, and our form jumped massively because of it.

I've also answered your question; Benitez didn't always play great football, but he never took credit for it either. He always said it was about getting better, and that's what happened in a lot of ways. We recorded more points in the second season, the football (post-January) was much better, I'd say only bettered by Pardew's brief run with Cisse/Cabaye and co. He talked about wanting to improve the training ground, and to start genuinely aiming for the top half.

Steve Bruce talked about aiming for the top half, then when he felt the water rising he drastically changed his tune and said his only remit is survival. He's done exactly to us what he did to you - made out to the media like we're all f***ing barmy and hysterical. Between the 12th of December and the 12th of March we won three games. That's when he called us hysterical keyboard warriors. Now, sure, if he was a massive Sunderland fan I'd probably get that. But imagine someone off here saying that about you lot, after that record.

I don't like Bruce because he's everything I dislike in real-life. He's first in the queue when it's bowls of compliments, but when there's responsibility to be dished out he can't find his plate.

I had never seen us play Newcastle at tht stage, in fact my dad asked me once who I thought our local rivals were and I said Middlesborough, "You will learn" was his response.
However I wanted them to get battered, and they did :) after Reading that the bandy legged alcoholic wanted us to get beat in 1973
