Films that were lauded when they came out but turns out they were absolute shite

Depends what sort of film you normally like, really, doesn't it? I don't care for action or superhero stuff so tend not to bother with them. I watched Gladiator for the first time, at Ms Z's urging, the other week and it was better than I expected although I still went to bed before it was finished. The popularity of Sci-fi films often leaves me baffled, even if they're ok. Something like the Rocky films just make me laugh.

Gone With The Wind, tried watching for the first time recently and just four hours of mind numbing boredom!
Blade Runner.
2001: A Space Odyssey
I have to agree with @Dark Traveller regarding all of the Monty Python films and A Fish Called Wanda.
Plus the majority of films with John Wayne.

I clicked on the last page of this thread out of curiosity and confident that some of it may upset me.

I agree that Gone With The Wind is 'of its time' - trying to read the book, but god it's slow. But it's a good film of its day. Some uncomfortable moments for the woke in there.

Blade Runner; Go to your room. No tea, No telly, no games. PJs on and straight to bed. Think about what you said and see me later.

2001: See Gone With The Wind.

I dislike John Wayne as a person (what I know about him) but The Searcher, Stagecoach, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon... (what was the other John Ford one) are classics. Or maybe I'm nostalgic.

You can add 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance' and 'The Shootist' to that list.

Were you thinking about 'Rio Bravo'?

Very Probably. I'll agree with Liberty Valance (James Stewart was the better performer in that for me... and Lee Marvin). Not so keen on the Shootist.

He made some shite as well tho-but

Cape Fear... shite
Silence of the Lambs...shite
The original Cape Fear is excellent, Robert Mitchum's baddie was way ahead of its time.
Well if people are just going to chuck in films they don't like I'll say:
Forrest Gump
Saving Private Ryan - apart from the first 20 mins, what follows is an exercise in Hollywood sentimentality.
I'm well aware I'm on me own in this opinion.

On the topic of John Wayne True Grit is good and I like Red River and The Shootist. On the main subject I can only think of Titanic.

Good shout SoS

The first30 mins of SPR are brilliant and arguably the best and most realistic filming of combat done to date. But then Spielberg settles into his mawkish sentimentality. When they come across the family in the bombed out house and the lad wants to rescue the little lass. WTF was he gonna do with her, carry her on his back through combat right until Berlin was liberated? The daft twat!
