He is a Championship standard player at this level he should be performing alot better and alot more regularly. At this level for him turning up 5 games here 5 games there is not good enough

For me he should be a main player in us going up
Can’t think of many consistent wingers he’s worth been on the pitch because he can win you a game in a split second rather than someone who’s juts steady away who’s never gonna do anything

He needs to get in the team first. Its worrying he cannot get in that side and done very little in pre season to suggest he should be

Perhaps not a popular view on here but Gooch seems unable to maintain a level of solid performance across a season. He’s a forward or an attacking midfielder with flaws of over-complicating moves, over-complicating dribbling and his decision making in early releasing a ball to a team-mate is suspect. He occasionally does go on a run of decent form and deserves a place in the side but he is not an automatic choice for me. More importantly for me I don’t think that we should continue to shoehorn players into unfamiliar roles, I’d rather we concentrated our coaching in improving Gooch and the like in their preferred and existing roles together with building a squad with experienced and capable players brought in to play within a formation and tactics preferred by the manager. Isn’t that why a club has coaches ? We are at the beginning of a campaign yet already we’re talking about infilling shortage areas in the squad by dropping in players to cover what would normally happen as an emergency action needed because of injury or suspension.

Our recruitment and football planning in years has been awful. Until we are out of the situation of considering which fill-in player is the best damage-limitation option because we don’t have a designated player in that position we’ll never improve.
Until we identify and recruit better players then it might be better to find a formation that gets the best of our most consistent performers.

Fair comment, unpopular or not. Some of his flaws hinge around not getting his head up be aware of his team mates. When he has been good form he's been effective, and he has a fair turn of pace.

Edit: Also: he has more competition in his position this season, to keep in on his toes, and on the bench if he's not performing.

I dont think its to ridiculous for us fans to expect him to be doing better. He is on the bench ffs

Yes, if we're playing 2 more defensive minded cm, why not they can cover.
There's our issue there^^^^

Why are we persisting with 2 defensive midfielders, especially at home? Drop one of them and put another attacking midfielder or forward on the pitch.Let's play higher up the pitch in the opposition's half instead of worrying what our opponents are going to do.

He doesn't.

It is.

He is nowhere near the first name on our sheet on talent. Nowhere near.

Are you sure you don't mean Graham Gooch? At cricket. In 1990?

In my opinion he is and he has backed that up in the Championship in the past with very good performances
  No he hasn't.
Honestly baffled by this. He's a technically poor player, tactically limited, with a first touch that will limit him to this league or the lower reaches of the one above. At best. He does well for us because he is a grafter with a bit of pace and has good character. Not sure what outstanding talent you see.
Spot on.

Because one of our better attacking players is a centre half, so we need the cover to give him licence to get forward. We also have one fullback that can't defend, and another that isn't really a fullback at all (not sure what he is mind, 'cos he'll never make a midfielder as long as I've got a hole in me arse).
So he has never had a good game in the Championship? Stop talking shite man
He was a bit part player and we finished bottom marra. We won only 2 games in which he started. Don't ask me which ones but his performance obviously wasn't memorable enough.

He's as League 1 as a League 1 footballer gets, in and out of an ordinary League 1 side.

O’Nien did not beat his man, or infact never tried,he also doesn’t have the pace required, the Man Utd kid would have filled this role better, assuming he is right footed.I also think Gooch has been inconsistent and had a bad start to preseason.Lets hope our style of play is more suited to the Oxford game.

The other stat thread showed O’Nien is actually a very effective RWB that chips in with assists and goals. The way to improve the side isn’t to fuck about with positions that are filled perfectly adequately but to replace your two or three shittest players. For us they’re not in defence. FWIW Gooch could probably be a decent RWB but as he is also one of the few quick forward minded players at the club he would be better used in a forward position.
