So remove a player who is better defensively from a more defensive position, replace him and play someone out of position who is weaker defensively, because he’s a better attacking option, because he’s actually an attacking player?

Tbh that sounds exactly like something a Sunderland manager would do. Still have nightmares of Wilkinson playing Micky Gray on the right wing

With 2WB, 3CD, and 1DM, I think we could spare one of them on occasions to bolster our attacking options.
Keeping 6 defensive players on the pitch, when getting beat at home, say 0-1 to a poor team, would be stupid, wouldn't it.😉

it’s not that bad an idea - really depends whether your default is 3-5-2 or 5-3-2. I would argue in this league our emphasis should be 3-5-2

I thought we looked better when he came on on Saturday

We did a bit, though the improvement had begun before that. There were times before that when we did everything but score, due to lack composure in front of goal.

And I don't think the improvement was just down to Gooch, any more than Wyke who came on at the same time. We changed formation to 4-4-2, took a defender off for an attacking player, and changing how the CM's were used. This is something that PP was very reluctant to do last season. Subs were nearly always like-for-like, and nearly always leaving 3-CBs.

I'm not necessarily recommending to 4-4-2 full time. But we need more of a plan B.

Perhaps not a popular view on here but Gooch seems unable to maintain a level of solid performance across a season. He’s a forward or an attacking midfielder with flaws of over-complicating moves, over-complicating dribbling and his decision making in early releasing a ball to a team-mate is suspect. He occasionally does go on a run of decent form and deserves a place in the side but he is not an automatic choice for me. More importantly for me I don’t think that we should continue to shoehorn players into unfamiliar roles, I’d rather we concentrated our coaching in improving Gooch and the like in their preferred and existing roles together with building a squad with experienced and capable players brought in to play within a formation and tactics preferred by the manager. Isn’t that why a club has coaches ? We are at the beginning of a campaign yet already we’re talking about infilling shortage areas in the squad by dropping in players to cover what would normally happen as an emergency action needed because of injury or suspension.

Our recruitment and football planning in years has been awful. Until we are out of the situation of considering which fill-in player is the best damage-limitation option because we don’t have a designated player in that position we’ll never improve.

Parkinson has already had a look at him there and - for the upteenth time - in our formation O'Nein and Hume are primarily attacking players, the two central midfielders primarily defensive.

It's really not the silliest idea I've heard on here at all.

Gooch gets caught on the ball in ridiculous areas to be a wingback

A nothing player ??! Didn’t he get ten goals last season ?

I think my point is he has the talent to be the best player in this league. His form is way way to erratic and its now found him on the bench

He should be the first name on our team sheet every game. He needs to be better

He’s a winger that what wingers are like it’s not always their fault sometimes it is sometimes the team don’t get the ball to him

He doesn't.

It is.

He is nowhere near the first name on our sheet on talent. Nowhere near.

Are you sure you don't mean Graham Gooch? At cricket. In 1990?

Honestly baffled by this. He's a technically poor player, tactically limited, with a first touch that will limit him to this league or the lower reaches of the one above. At best. He does well for us because he is a grafter with a bit of pace and has good character. Not sure what outstanding talent you see.

He is a Championship standard player at this level he should be performing alot better and alot more regularly. At this level for him turning up 5 games here 5 games there is not good enough

For me he should be a main player in us going up yet he currently cant get in the team
