Do you love England?

I have noticed over the years that the slagging off can be local as well. A number of local people don't seem to like Sunderland much.

Having returned to the city God knows how many times over the years and long seen it as a home away from home I sometimes wonder if those being negative about the city don't see what you all have just outside your front door.

Each time am over I often find myself sitting on one of the benches by the seafront puffing my dear ol' pipey. Some of the locals walking their dogs even remember me from previous visits which is very heart-warming and their smiles and kind words when they stop and have a chat about what has happened since last time put the NE folk in a very good light.

But I also get the slightly confused look from some when they ask me why am there and I tell them am on holiday. To some locals it seem baffling why anyone would come to Sunderland for a fortnight as a tourist. Especially from abroad.

But England is beautiful. Sunderland and the NE even more so. I wouldn't return again and again if I didn't love it so much. Back over in two weeks time and I cannot wait.
Its a bit of a cliché but we often don't appreciate the things right in front of us.

I have no love for England itself.

I’m a British citizen, not an English citizen.

English nationalism is just a cause of bitter, lost, and often middle-aged men looking for identity.

That wasn’t the question though. You were asked do you love England, not do you love the English. I love England, but I also love France and some parts of Spain. I’m not struck on some of the French but the Spanish seem okay but their country is stunning in parts, just like England.

But you’re in a democracy. That in itself is something to be grateful for. Might not be the ideal choice but at least it was the choice of the majority.

Of course. But democracy can also show how idiotic and/or selfish the majority are.

Anyway that has nowt to do with people panic buying baby food and medication meaning others ended up suffering. Or littering or treating Thier towns like shit. Or avoiding indipendant local businesses in favour of multi national franchises. That's nowt to do with democracy. It's to do with people not caring about where they live and their neighbours

Not you I take it,

I like some English people and not others. The same could be said for other nationalities.

Great post mate. I think it’s people’s own regret that they’re mistaking. I don’t consider my life a great success but I certainly appreciate the people that helped me be able to have it.

England is so diverse. Love it me.

I used to like travelling through industrial areas, marveling at the scale and might of industry.

In a way, its a bit sad that that aspect has almost disappeared....

....to be replaced by endless modern housing estates.

I literally said in my opening line I have no love for England.

Thats a bit of a stereotypical generalisation you implied shouldn't be allowed on a messenger board.

Maybe you should practice what you preach

I was supposed to be in Turkey now, but the rest of the family didn't fancy it so I moved it yo next year. I hired a touring caravan and drove South. We've ended up touring Norfolk this week and stayed on a few sites with some cracking little villages nearby. Going to head further down for a few days before coming back up. The weather has helped massively mind.
