[First Test] England v West Indies - Southampton

I think he would have got more wickets than wood
Debateable. Only took one less than Anderson and archer. Stokes was out best wicket taker. Problem is he seems to gift a lot of runs too
My main issue is we seem to say to our fast bowlers to bang in in short so much

It's developing. The top order is starting to come together, Root to come back in as well. The pace attack is promising as well (we were crying out for two 90mph bowlers last time we went to Oz). Bes has looked interesting. We've got time on our hands as well.
Youre massively in denial if you think theyre doing anything in australia mind

It’s 18 months away yet and I believe they have plans similar to ours for this winter. They’ll do everything to they can to get it played. Who would have thought this series would get played three months ago

Well done West Indies imo. If I had to pick one side I don’t mind losing to at home it’d be New Zealand but WI are a close second.
Nice to see a resurgence in Caribbean cricket and sets the series up nicely.

Commentary needs work though. Going against the grain here but Michael Holding is starting to grate a little bit while i just really don’t like Ian Bishop commentating.

Don’t agree with Stokes, it was a clear mistake not batting first with those conditions and leaving out Broad. Don’t think he should be trying to paint it as anything else even given his point about sending out the wrong message.

Four seamers plus Stokes was the way to go.

Fair comments. No problem re the mikey comment. Stokes was hoping for a crumbling pitch but that first day was always going to be shortened and bowling then, imo England would have had the windies struggling

still that’s the way it goes and both teams will be better for the run. England were not to far off being able to force a win

I’m generally a big fan of MH but he’s been getting a bit too ‘I told you so’ for me for a while now. Slightly grating on me but I’d sooner listen to him than Bishop, sure he’s a lovely fella but just don’t like his style.

You’re not going to like this mate but I didn’t see the need for Bess here and I still don’t - his valuable first innings runs and unlucky non lb today aside he should have sat this one out for me. I like him, especially with the bat, but unless it’s a dust bowl at Old Trafford, with Root coming back in, I think, for me, he misses out and Broad comes back in. Possibly Woakes for Wood and Root for Denly. Not too fussed what they do with the Buttler, runs in the first innings but poor otherwise. I’d be as happy to see him get another chance as I would seeing Foakes get a game.
Wouldnt be surprised to see us bounce back strongly at OT and even go on to win the series. It’s what we do.
Hope you enjoy your slight profits from today mate 😉
They might have done that if Root was playing
Yeah quite possibly with his off spin. Spins not played a big role at all here though and was never likely to.

Grrr  . Very slight profit in the game but does me. I’ll be looking to create another no lose position at old Trafford

I love Mikey Holding. Much like Boycott, he knows the game and talks a lot of sense. Wasn't it him who advised Wood to lengthen his run up?

No, but you need a spinner to take a few overs off the quicks, even if you have 5 of them
Didn’t realise Chase bowled 25 overs second innings. Didn’t bowl at all first innings though.

Not sure I agree if you’ve got 5 seamers, four yes definitely. Normally Id say four and a spinner would be the way to go, but given the fast bowling depth we had available and the fact it was Stokes first go as captain, plus his workload is already being discussed, particularly given his importance in the batting line up at 5, even more so here with Root missing and given the conditions in the first two days, I just think if we’d gone four seamers plus Stokes and bowled first, we’d have won quite comfortably. Fine margins I guess.

Me too, fingers crossed.

Not sure, could be. I like him a lot too, but he is starting to grate as I’ve said. Only slightly. But then it would be quicker to name the commentators I do like these days, football, cricket, racing, I can’t stand most of them. I think it’s a case of familiarity breeds contempt with some of them. And maybe I’m just turning into a grumpy old sod.

Good test match, thought the Windies played with a lot of discipline, something missing from their last few visits to our shores.

England weren’t terrible, they just didn’t make the most of opportunities. Denly to be replaced for the next test is a must. Broad back in but not sure who for, I think Old Trafford will be a quicker pitch and Archer and Wood will be useful.

He will but its not a "must", there were a fair few batsman who were worse.

Didnt really contribute to our loss, what did Pope do for example

fair play you want him dropped for long term reason, but its not a "must"

Literally only Pope was worse, and second innings he ended up batting with the tail.

It is a must to get him out of the team if we want to progress. Decent stop gap but his time has come to an end now.
