Panic Buying

Just been around a few supermarkets picking up some essentials for her mum who is largely housebound, if you don't mind visiting a couple of stores and hit the likes of Iceland there is plenty of food. Just think outside the box a bit for meals and cook a bit more fresh (lots of fresh veg in all the shops we went into). Freezer isles and processed food not doing so well which says a lot for the class of person panic buying.... they'll need that toilet roll because they'll have the shits for weeks with their diet.

It appears that years of being told how special we brits are has made some of us feel entitled and less inclined to see the problems of others. All those who posted on here about how we’re british and we can survive anything, bulldog breed, blitz spirit etc. should look at how many who believed that and voted accordingly are now behaving and consider the future of our country. We’re not better than our continental neighbours and the much mocked Italians are currently showing us how decent people behave in a crisis. I hope things improve because we aren’t currently living up to our own expectations.
Fantastic post, which I will paraphrase in the future. So f***ing pissed off with people. Old bloke on 5live who is house bound can't get a delivery slot, and only has a few tins of soup left.

Like I said it wouldn't totally solve it bur it would help.
I agree with you, we do need some measures put in place. Luckily we have a chest freezer full of mainly meat we’ve bought when it’s been yellow stickered. Only need a few essentials a couple of times a week. I think allowing only baskets would help.

I think people need to think about the difference between ‘panic buying’ as the media love to call it and people ‘stocking up’ on essentials in case of any potential lock down?

Totally agree there are some selfish twats who are clearly hoarding more than they need, but there are plenty of people just getting prepared too and buying sensibly? We live in a rural location with a number of elderly neighbours, and this situation has brought out a great spirit in people in our area offering to get extra shopping for neighbours - previously strangers - who can’t get to the shops themselves.

So don’t always be too quick to judge everyone ?
A lock down doesn't mean food shops will close and getting prepared for what?

Edit. Also think your situation is unique, it won't be people buying for others but being selfish wankers.

There is simply no need. It is the misconception that hoarding and buying excessively is necessary to ensure you get yours that is causing the problem and nothing else. The supermarkets are restocking quickly and at 2pm today I could have filled my cupboards with plenty of food for a mixed and healthy diet for weeks if I wanted. Only certain things like bog roll and handwash would have been an issue today after visiting only 3 supermarkets. And even then I could have wiped my arse on kitchen roll for the next month if I had to. It's madness, honestly its absolute f***ing madness. We are not running out of food! The masses of idiots filling their trolleys without any need are causing supply chain and availability disruption, that is all.

Aye baskets only unless you need a trolley for health reasons.

Started in the 80’s with the “there is no such thing as society, only individuals “ quote and gone down hill from there. I just hope after this is all over people reassess the need for community and collective organisation.
Yes. People have been bombarded with messages for years to “buy, buy, buy”.

Half our retail is based on people buying things they don’t need and will barely use.

It’s hardly surprising people are going OTT

Posted this on another thread. Anyone caught hoarding to the detriment of others should only be allowed to purchase this.

Why can't the supermarkets get shopping lists from healthcare workers before they start their shifts and have them waiting for them when they finish? They shouldn't be expected to spend their time off duty f***ing about trying to get groceries.

The opening of the 'special hours' to NHS staff is a huge help for us personally, but the staff are at the mercy of their working hours. This for me sounds like a great idea.

How hard can it be? I honestly can't see any downside to it.
And well done marra - proud of you.
