Not a greatest hits album in its usual sense, but a collection of tracks, B-sides, and session tracks.....

The Smiths - Hatful of Hollow.

The best album they ever released imho, followed by Meat is Murder.

yup agreed with Ash too, although 1977 is pretty damn good all way through.
Random story about them. Every year we go to watch the Xmas lights switch on in Paisley (I live just outside Glasgow). They normally have some x factor reject performing and pressing the button. Couple of years ago it was Ash. All us older folk had a great time jumping about and the young team just stood about looking confused.

Oi Oi, their tenth album ain’t too shabby either man.
Monster had some good tracks on it - What's the Frequency Kenneth, Crush with Eyeliner, Bang and Blame. I can't honestly remember any of the tracks on New Adventures - maybe I need to give it another listen. And for their last five albums I think they were phoning it in - the albums mostly 'sound' ok, and they may be good efforts by normal standards, but for one of the most interesting bands of the 80s and 90s there's really not a lot to engage with in my opinion.
The Stones.
Exile on Main Street and Sticky Fingers are great albums.
fully agree.

I settled in that run of five as it was a reply to him not having enough time to delve in to the huge back catalogue
If anyone wants to get into Springsteen then go for the Live 75-85 album. That should lead them into the albums the songs came from.

Hatful of hollow is indeed the best smiths album . Definitley one of my top 5 ever albums.

Hatful of hollow, word won't listen and louder than bombs were all compilations and the smiths only ever did 4 real albums. Apart from ( most of ) meat is murder then the smiths best albums are not real albums ( but still some.of the best music ever made )

Well, fuck you then ;)

Let Me In was the best song on Monster imo.
Haunting as fuck.
Sounded nothing like anything they’d done before or since.
The whole point of carrying on, I guess?

Aside from the four singles, New Test Leper, Undertow, Leave, Be Mine & So Fast So Numb were all great album tracks on New Adventures.
And Low Desert is one of my favourite Stipe lyrics.

On the whole I agree about the final five albums.
They missed Bill Berry incredibly.
So much more than just merely a drummer that guy.

question mate, as you’re clearly a big fan. What’s your favourite REM album and what would you recommend to a novice ( except out of time / automatic which I do know )?

the other day on 6 music they played a track which was clearly REM and it turns out it was E-bow the letter. what a tune that was.

Stipe is one of the greatest front men ever like - stands alongside Jagger, Plant, Iggy...

And the remix version of Let Me In is better than the original album version :p
