New Music Releases Thread

So, new (and newish) stuff I've listened to this week:

Strawberry Guy - an EP of quite nice, vaguely psychedelic melodic pop ballads. Promising!
Allan Stone - cracking voice, vaguely Stevie Wonderish. Some good songs, sometime goes a bit too Jamiroquai for me.
clipping - sinister, clever, interesting, more rock'n'roll than much else released this year. Probably my hip-hop album of the year (if it counts as hip-hop) and the album that Death Grips have been almost making for ages. The 18 minute final track can probably go though (unless abrasive ambience is your thing).
Richard Fearless - instrumental electronica with one eye on the club and one foot in the dining room. Pretty good.
Maija Sofia - female singer songwriter stuff. Nice but sweary. Promising!
Omar Souleyman - Syrian wedding disco tunes as per. It's enjoyable but all a bit similar to everything he records. Cracking live!
Girl Ray - indie Girl Ray have indeed become sophisto R'n'B flecked pop Girl Ray. Decent enough without being spectacular.
Beck - it's got some good songs on it but his albums now tend to be about looking back to his past not forward to inventiveness.
Leonard Cohen - I had my worries about a posthumous release but this is very, very good.
Avalanche Party - young lads from Yorkshire doing vaguely sinister indie rock. Along the same lines as the Fat Whites or Cabbage. (more the latter, in fairness)
Aziza Brahim - Spain based Sahwari refugee. Vaguely desert rock/blues. She's very good!
The Building - the main man, Anthony LaMarca has a day job playing guitar/keys for The War On Drugs. Vaguely of that vibe but more low key.
Ballaké Sissoko & Baba Sissoko - Malian brilliance, one plays the kora, one does percussion, vocals and ngoni.

This week's releases as far as I'm concerned:

Toy - possibly the best thing they've done. Interesting range of covers.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - chuffing marvellous as usual.
Jeffrey Lewis - good. Needs repeated listens to see how it compares to his best.
Tindersticks - exceptinoally, exceptionally good (if you like Tindersticks).
Sessa - quite summery Brazlian acoustic pop. Apparently, if you translate the lyrics, they're filthy.
DJ Shadow - very long but, I think very good. Effectively two albums. One more instumental, one with a lot of guests.
Arthur Russell - kind of new but not. A compilation of his more indie-centric songs. Second one of these, possibly not as good as the first.
That Toy covers album is great, are there any other albums by them worth a listen?

This week I have mostly been listening to Sissoko & Sissoko and Aziza Brahim on @Arkle 's recommendation. Also the excellent new release of Arthur Russell demos 'Iowa Dream', Shanti Celeste's 'Tangerine', Girl Ray - 'Girl', The Naked and Famous 'Simple Forms', DMA's - 'For Now' and Hayley Mary (debut (?) single) 'The Piss, The Perfume' (which is superb). That is all....

Bit of a slow down in new stuff this week. Albums from Anyway Gang, Jack Penate, Joe Pesci, Robbie WIlliams (a Christmas album), The Flaming Lips (a live recording of The Soft Bulletin) and Mappe Of.

That’s a tiny list this week.

I was going to say that I’ve paid no attention to Jack Penate since 2009, but when I went to add the album to my library I discovered that it’s his first album since then!

I didn't realise he'd been around that long (not an artist that's really on my radar).

The weekly Rough Trade email came through today and added the deluxe version of Prince's 1999, a compilation called "Tim Peaks" (compiled by Tim Burgess), an EP by Nardeydey (young jazz types), the annual Beans On Toast album and a Stick In The Wheel "mixtape".
