Golden Lion south hylton

I've never heard of him actually living in the pub - in the compound next to it with all of his dogs, yes. But never the pub itself.

He will have claimed that he owned it - he used to tell anyone who would listen that he owned most of South Hylton.

Yeah I remember the compound and the dogs. He was a good storyteller and I suppose years ago he was the main man in Hylton or so he liked people to believe

Did he really or was that just an urban myth ?
Yes, he lived upstairs. When I was a kid my brother fell in the river and was hauled out by a Jimmy Doran. Charlie came over, wrapped him in a blanket and took us all upstairs to his squat. It was a mess and smelly. He lived there for years since the ferry stopped.

Edit: this would have been 1968

Class mate I didn't know that .... He was a bit of a hylton Legend....... So was jimmy Doran haha

Charlie Darby was the Laird of the parish, interesting though insular character, there was a few such people in "The village" back then.

Aye, it felt like a proper village. My family had been there for generations. My grandad wrote a history of the village which is available from the local history society
I haven't been back in maybe 25'ish years mate,I hear the natives are getting uptight nowadays that the village has been connected to the outside world with the newfangled iron-horse, which brings outsiders in 😜

I remember Jerry from the oaks, super cheerful guy, and old wilf from the house along the lines who didn't understand electricity (or maybe he did) and electrocuted himself when taken into a care home 😔

Talking of which, anyone remember Gerry who was in the Oaks who would wander around Hylton when the mood took him?
Yup, I mentioned him but miss-spelt his name 🤣used to love his pipe, always sat on the bench and told me his pacemaker wires were sticking out of his chest which scared me as a small kid 🤣

That's wilf and his lab, great old character, always gave us an ice cold glass of water in the summer when we walked up the lines, I heard he put a fork in an electric socket in a care home, sad end.
