Jumper on the bridge

Good post.
Nurses are leaving mental health at an alarming rate.

Imagine trying to keep someone alive who doesn’t want to be, to the point where they can only eat liquidised food as they try and choke themselves with normal food. It must be horrific.
Aye mate. I've got around eight mates that work in mental health as nurses and management. Really good set of lads and lasses

The crys for help are falling in deaf ears imo. Access to mental health services are limited, especially in Sunderland. We are the only place in Britain to limit counselling sessions to 6. Mind that was 3 year ago when
my mate nearly committed suicide.
My missus works in cherry knowle so I know first hand the strain the system is under. It ain’t great for staff or patients.
But where do you draw the line?
Hope he gets the help he needs.
Dont know about Sunderland but in Shields currently you can have a cbt course but cant actually get 121 councelling unless you have actully self harmed even if you are threatening nd hving suicidal thoughts.

I went past a couple of weeks ago with the bairn and there was a young lass over the other side being spoken to by police. Seems to be happening more and more.

Used to happen a lot at Marsden cliffs in Shields as well.
Still does, not news anymore and the local paper is printed in Sheffield. I personally have known 15 people who committed suicide in the past 30 years and gave witnessed three. Stopped drinking at the Grotto years ago.

Christ. That’s appalling, Sunderland do have a fast track for self harmers and ex forces, people who need it quick so to speak.
When it comes to mental health it seems like all the bosses get together come up with a plan and then totally do the opposite to what is needed. It comes down to funding imo. Money matters over health unfortunately.

Aye same here. That’s how I pick tit bits up as they are always talking about it. I Think my Mrs would leave the trust tomorrow but she’s done 25 year and wants to see it through.

What does she do there?

Becoming an epidemic. What sort of society are we living in? I had issues and luckily got a good counsellor. Still hangs over me but at least I’m still here. Many people out there who are in trouble don’t stand a chance because they will never be able to access support. It really is shocking.

Sadly Sunderland is not alone in the six session limit
On a related note, was on a train to Scotland earlier this week and someone jumped in front of it just outside Berwick.

we went through a spate a few week ago of people jumping from Scammonden bridge, the big bridge over the m62. Havent heard owt for the last couple of weeks so hopefully attempts have dried up for now. The usual cry in the local press and comments section is to put up barriers to stop people but I`ve a horrible feeling that if the local authorities do and manage to stem the flow people will simply find another spot to do it. And worse of all the barriers will become the cheap solution to the symptoms rather than real money being spent on mental healthcare and solving the problem properly

I dropped the bairn off earlier and that's when I saw all the stuff going on. Heading back to Shields now and no traffic over the bridge in that direction as all being diverted. Horrible that it comes to this for people.

Lass from work jumped off there a few years ago, awful.

Exactly. Barriers would just be like sticking on a Band Aid and not dealing with the real issues.

Headed over the bridge about 10.30 and the fire brigade were using a cherry picker then..the lifeboat crew were still there and loads of police..sounded like some sort of cutting/grinder type equipment was being used??...anyway glad to hear he didn't jump.

Not sure suicide is always down to mental health issues. I'd say the vast majority are but not necessarily in all cases.
Mental health care in this country is archaic and horrendously under funded but it does feel like society is at least opening up about it far more which can only be a good thing.

How do you help someone who you have no idea there was a problem till they are dead?

There is always someone to talk to away from any professional yet they choose not to even do that.

I’ve lost a fair number of friends over the years it leaves absolute devastation, even guilt for those left behind, asking themselves why.

Obviously that can never ever be answered, where is the stigma in asking say a parent for help?
There are very rarely choices in these situations, not for the individual with the problem. Sit anyone with a mental illness down and tell them that they can choose to change their behaviour - it won’t work.

I think I know what you are trying to say, but ultimately only mental illness will cause you take your own life, outside of a military or spur of the moment, heroic act.

Look at the reasons why people may take their own lives...

Debt = despair = depression = mental illness
Addiction (of any kind) = despair = depression = mental illness
Loneliness/rejection/loss = despair = depression = mental illness
Failure = despair = depression = mental illness
Terminal/life changing diagnosis = despair = depression = mental illness
Guilt = despair = depression = mental illness
Eating disorders = ditto
Stress = ditto
Fear of loss = ditto
Depression = ditto (just a more direct route)
