New Music Releases Thread

Saw that, Saturday night also.
Always a bonus.

I’d never heard of them until yesterday. I saw the tour shared on John Grants Facebook page and just assumed it was a band who’d supported him or something. Put them on Spotify and realised he was singing. Done a bit googling and searched this thread too. I’ve probably listened to it 3 times now and I think it’s excellent.

Off to see Ben Folds & a Piano at a sold out Perth Theatre tonight. We’re in row C (as close as is possible if you’ve not paid £4k to go on holiday with him) and I’m very excited!
Not very often a gig finishes at 9:15pm and you come out completely satisfied but he did play for an hour and a half. Superb from start to finish, probably the best acoustics I’ve ever experienced in a live music venue, he played a couple of unexpected tracks and the banter with the crowd was great. Crowd was bizarrely quiet though.

A mixed bag of new stuff this week. Releases from Ada Lea, Beyonce, Crown the Empire, Davina and the Vagabonds, Generationals, HUNNY, Maxo Kream, Mike Love, Nas, Plastic Picnic, Scott Stapp, Sum 41, Tenderlonious, Darren Hayman, The Flaming Lips (their record store day album gets a full release).

Actually, not really a mixed bag.

Any SMBers going to Green Man this year? Sorry if it’s been discussed recently... final acts added to the lineup and it’s looking like a corker.
Aye. Fourth year in the Settlers Camp.

My 13yo got me onto Beabadoobee. She's got a lo fi, Belly, Elliot Smith, Sonic Youth kid of vibe.

Looking forward to having my head melted by Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, and having a bit of a cider fuelled dance around to Peaness.

Think it’s my fourth as well. I’ll give that a listen. Looking forward to Self Esteem (my favourite live show I can remember in ever), Squid and Nov3l

Pigs x7 should be fun.

Booked in for them in September

Any idea when new tracks are out?

Someone said they’d signed their album deal last week (canny label too). Would expect something new next month, or maybe Sep.

You should check out Porridge Radio, Current Affairs, Just Mustard, Ghum, Sinead O’Brien... all new(ish) ones we’re doing bits with atm I think you’d like. They’re the more 6Music end of the spectrum we have.

Absolutely loving Beabadoobee. Really appeals to my deep rooted love for Midwest American Emo

New Wilco album due early October. Single, or at least the song to promote the album is a lovely understated song released this week. Hopefully signifies a return to form after the last two pretty ordinary albums

So new and newish stuff I've been listening to this week:

Bill Baird - didn't realise he'd put out a new album 2 or 3 months back. It's good as his stuff generally is. Propulsive krautrock type thing.
The Quiet Temple - this came out a couple of weeks ago. They're centred around Duke Garwood and Rich Machin (of Soulsavers) with a rolling cast of others. Six tracks (all 5-10 mins) of music which treads a line between jazz, krautrock, post-rock and psychedelia. Exceptionally good!
Chinatown Slalom - again out for a little while, I think. They're youngish and try to combine The Avalanches, The Beta Band and Hot Chip. It doesn't all work but some of it is very good. Filed under very promising...
Sunny Side Up (compilation) - an exploration of Melbourne's burgeoning jazz scene. Some of it is very good, some is not really my thing. Interesting though...
Darren Hayman - a well timed album about 12 astronauts (called "12 Astronauts"). It's Hayman doing his post-Hefner maudlin indiepop thing. Worth a listen.
The Flaming Lips - their best in a long time but as @Gideon Gungeon says, not back to their peak. Seems quite low key. May be a grower?
Ada Lea - Canadian indie rock singwer-songwriter's debut. It's good. She's got a strong voice and varies things enough to keep it interesting.
Kit Sebastian - Rough Trade shops raved about this. French/English/Turkish band with a handy line in retro psychedelia. They describe themselves as ‘Anatolian lo-fi samba’. Doesn't sound like it was recorded in 2019. Recommended.

Must be on a bit of a downer atm, as apart from the Flaming Lips (good, not great) nothing in there actually appeals to me, apart from perhaps Bill Baird and The Quiet Temple. . As ever, thanks for the heads-up and run-down though @Arkle
