New Music Releases Thread

Josefina Ohrn and the liberation is a mighty fine album, really impressed, think I’ll have to get along to the Cluny in November for that.
Been a good week for new stuff, love Springsteen’s new single, and the Josh Ritter album is rather good. He’s doing a few UK dates in the summer, going to try and get to the Edinburgh one.

Another week, another batch of new albums. New releases this week include albums from Bad Religion, Barrie, Big Thief, Caroline Spence, Drahla, Editors, Filthy Friends, Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes, L7, Looms, Lucy Spraggan, Patience (Roxanne from Veronica Falls), Rhiannon Giddens, Tacocat, The Dream Syndicate, The Wildhearts, Vampire Weekend, Protomartyr (re-release of their first album), Jan St Werner, Roseanne Reid (daughter of a Proclaimer) and The Felice Brothers.

So, I've already mentioned Morbo's album, which is totally bostin'. Beyond that:

Aldous Harding - she's made the move properly from quirky folk type to full on lyrical loon. Musically, it's brilliant and the lyrics are ace and bonkers.
King Gizzo and the Lizzo Wizzo - it's less overtly rock than some of their stuff. Really enjoying it. We need more songs with Boogie in the name.
Marissa Nadler & Stephen Brodsky - I'm filing this under interesting. The cover of Morphine's "In Spite of Me" is great. Morphine should have been much more famous. Anyway, rest of the album needs more listens.
Altın Gün - Turkish folk songs done in a psychedelic style. Does what it says on the tin. Very good! Turkey is the new Sweden/Iceland/Canada/Portugal.
Guided By Voices - they do two types of albums. The ones with 24 songs in 37 minutes that have things on them that you think are brilliant but wish lasted longer and the ones with 24 songs in 80 minutes that have things on them that you think are brilliant but wish were a little shorter. This is of the former type.
Craig Finn - lyrically, as usual marvellous. Musically, as with his previous solo albums, it's a bit one paced. Not quite ballads, not quite rockers.
Foxygen - it's had some poor reviews but I think it's quite good. Best song sounds like a Springsteen pastiche. They're getting more and more cabaret.
Josh Ritter - produced by Jason Isbell with The 400 Unit used as his band, which might interest @Mickdundee. It's a very good album.
Danni Nicholls - my not quite new album choice for the week. Got a cracking review in Uncut, quite rightly. Kind of soulful Americana from someone from the UK. Seems like a talent!
The Mountain Goats - for me, on early listening, it's not one of their best. All seems a bit low key and one paced.
Parekh & Singh - pretty good. If you're interested in hearing what the best Swedish style indiepop band from India are like give it a wallop.
Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation - Öhrno (as I call her) has come up with the goods again. Really, really, really good! The usual slightly psych, slightly Krautrock, slightly several other things mix. Maybe a bit more festival crowd compatible than the previous couple of albums.
Listened to the Aldous Harding and Mountain Goats yesterday. As you say AH is batshit crazy lyrically but the music is 'nice'. Not for me unfortunately, probably because she has a lyrical style which is too forced. Mountain Goats, meh - samey dirgeful bollocks. sorry if that offends. Will check out Josh Ritter and Danni Nichols. Listening to Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation right now, very good....
Can't wait for the Vampire Weekend release.

Not offended at all. Mountain Goats' album still isn't grabbing me at all...

Interested to see what the big thief album is like in full, the songs released from it so far havent really grabbed me. Going to see them in a couple of weeks.

Bad Religion and The Wildhearts for me. Very excited about both even though both bands are arguably passed their best.

Bad Religion, Filthy Friends, and maybe Patience for me.

I'll give Editors a listen, too, but it's not "new" as such - remixes from their last album (RSD release)

The Drahla singles are interesting enough to give that a punt, too. Unusual vibe to those. Intrigued.

Have to say, I must be the only person on here not "getting" Aldous Harding. I really wanted to turn it off about 4 or 5 in, but I stuck it out to the end, thinking something was bound to happen. Hated it. Quite a surprisingly visceral reaction to something that, on the face of it to me, sounded so low-key, dull, and single-speeded (that single speed being very slow), yet made me want to punch someone for listening to it.

I was the same with aldous for a long time. Mates banging on about how great she was, didn’t like the singles off the new album and then when the album came out I just said I’d give it a go and something clicked. Really like
It all now.
