London congestion charge.. death of the diesel car

I am all for the environment being cleaned up but this is just a revenue making scam under the guise of being for the environment.

If Khants aim was truely to cut pollution then the most polluting of vehicles would be banned totally and not ‘allowed if you can afford it’.

This was talked about loads on LBC last week and workies were saying about their vans being in the chargeable group now so they would have to pass the extra onto the customer, some lentil muncher came on saying they should all be using bikes! Someone from the mayors office was keen to point out a scrappage scheme that gets about a 6 grand subsidy but failed to point out that the electric vans would cost about 60 grand.

Low emissions zones are ok in principle but when you can drive a massive 4.8 litre V8 turbo Porsche SUV for free and get charged £12.50 for using a Golf diesel then the whole thing is fucked.

They have already started a low emission zone in Glasgow. Buses at the moment, but phasing it in for commercial vehicles and then private over the next few years.

£87.50* a week if you live in London after 2021. The rich will buy new cars. The poor won't and therefore will be hit by this tax the hardest. And it won't really lessen traffic in London and if it does it will likely end up on the M25 which is already chocca.

*Approx £4500 pa
Which, tbh, makes it worth trading in.

People are actually dying because of this. Something has to be done. I'm not saying it must be this, but it has to be something, and urgently.

Will it reduce the amount of cars on the road? Not by enough. (Not that I have any great answers on how to reduce the congestion on London's roads).
They can't have it always. Sick of hearing how London has a population of 8million \ or a eighth of England's population. That's grand, crack on. Whilst the UK remains london centric, they'll have to put up with it. The charge mentioned is fuckin crazy mind.

Diesel isn’t good for our lungs and the government could have sorted it with scrappages, incentives and pricing. As it is, they have sat on their hands and even frozen duties year after year for diesel as well as petrol.

That has meant it has been left to the cities to do something about it, and no doubt they will take the blame for whatever measures they introduce.

Not long back Goverments were telling us to buy diesel motors.

On a related issue - I'm not convinced that this huge push towards all electric / phasing out ICE is a great idea. The infrastructure isn't there (in rural areas at least) for all electric and people will end up keeping older, dirtier cars on the road. They should be looking at a more balanced policy with a variety of fuel types rather putting all the eggs in one basket.

I see uber are sticking a quid on journeys. I imagine businesses will need to do the same. Something needs to be done about pollution mind.

Not seen the map of the area, tbh. I assumed it was central central london.
For now it is the same as the congestion zone and from 2021 it is the area between the north and south circulars.

You're doing okay to be able to afford a car.
The poorest won't have cars, but there is still a swathe of people, likely minimum wage type workers who run ten year old plus cars, bought for maybe £1500 or less, not everybody gets company cars or can afford those modern hire purchase type deals. Seems harsh, they can't afford to replace their car and they can't afford to keep it either.

The pollution angle is all well and good, but what about people who have diesels cos of the mpg? Even if you get rid of your diesel to avoid the charge, your fuel bill will go up considerably.
Petrol cars can fail the Ulez test too.

I’ve got a 13 year old diesel. I can’t afford a newer car (or any car at the minute), so if I lived in London and worked outside I’d now have to pay 12.50 a day. It’s bollocks man. They should just phase out old cars due to natural wastage, not rubbish like this.
I think it would be £25 a day currently. It is only the congestion zone that is ulez now. So £12.50 congestion charge and £12.50 Ulez . The fan will be hit in 18 months time when a much larger area will be ulez.

If it's as bad as being made out then why not just ban cars altogether (excepting buses, taxis, delivery vehicles).
It's like saying you are allowed to poison my kids as long as you pay £12.50 for the privilege.!
Exactly this- it's purely a money making scheme. As you say, if they are serious about cutting the pollution they would simply ban the vehicles rather than lay a charge

And face riots on the street. It has to be done incrementally.

What we need is dynamic road user charging system where you're charged on emissions plus distance travelled. I'm not sure why it hasn't been tested yet, the tech is there, I guess the initial costs will be high.

I also have zero issue with TfL recouping money from those who drive through London. They are financially screwed and are at the stage where public transport fares are now subsiding road maintenance in London, that's a joke.

I think this new tax would be accepted more readily if every penny of it was used to actively reduce pollution by other means.

It just looks like a money making scheme at the moment

Don’t see how Uber can do that as I can’t remember ever getting one in London that wasn’t a Prius or similar hybrid. How much of that will go to the drivers?
