I've watched a fair few comic reliefs over the years, I've never thought the people featured were useless.
I always thought they were starving and desperate for help

Honestly though, what the fuck have we come to when we're arguing about this? None of us as individuals can heal the structural inequalities that are forced on some African's but we can occasionally put a sticking plaster on the wound and improve some lives.

David Lammy has his good points and bad points, and has managed to sound like a bit of a dick on Twitter. There is a point to be made about Africa being seen as nothing more than a place to send charity to make ourselves feel better instead of looking properly at our relationship with that continent and rebalancing a few things.

I had an argument with an English teacher at school after she claimed "Women can't be sexist and black people can't be racist". Even at 12 I knew she was talking bullshit. So, I called her out in front of the class, a big argument ensued, everyone in the class apart from 1 lass (a feminist) agreed with me. The following week I got moved to a different class because she couldn't face me anymore.
It's amazing the mental gymnastics some people will do in order to fit life into their little ideological narrative.

Lammy has just been on LBC and is doubling down. Says the comic relief money raised in UK is nowhere near the amount of money sent to Africa by Africans (his words) in the UK and UK govt programmes. I've no reason to doubt him. He continues that therefore there is no reason for Comic Relief to exist other than an exercise in making people feel better about themselves.

What I didn't know at the time (because I was 12) is that English departments are full of (here it comes) Marxists and postmodernists.
During the 60's/70's when things like Women's Studies, Gender Studies and Black History were introduced to Universities and colleges there were no experts in the fields, and no professional psychologist or historian worth their salt would touch the subjects because they were so heavily politicised, so they plucked English professors from the English departments and said "Go ahead, you invent the subject". They had no training in biology or the sciences, were all left-leaning and reduced everything to semantics (postmodernism).
Skip forward 50 years and we're reaping the rewards.
