Londonderry Car Bomb

You're right. Except for the keeping everybody in NI happy bit. Generally most people in NI outside of the place, regardless of what foot they kick with refer to it along the lines of, "that shithole full of dour sounding oddballs" :).
The original anglicised version of the name was Derry. At that time, several hundred years ago within the county of Coleraine. Around the time it was granted the prefix "London" they also re-jigged county boundaries and named the county Londonderry. Always figured that would have been a fair compromise nowadays, giving a little respect to both sides. The city of Derry in the county of Londonderry.

That would be interesting to see a County GAA team called Londonderry (that isn't from London) playing in the All Ireland Championships in Croke Park. :)

Anglacisation of place names took place in 1800s, just prior to the famine. Brian Friel's play, ''Translations'' set in Donegal, is about it. Incidentally, ''Translations'' was first performed in the Guild Hall in Derry.

Just because 'everyone' calls it that it doesn't make it right does it?

Freedom of speech. People can call it what ever they want.

Bet they don’t!

2 yrs, go and educate yourself!

It’s in the UK of GB and NI
Ok then, all the ones I met when I worked out there or my mates from there have told me that. Though there's probably a few Uber unionist cavemen who are still bothered about it but I tend to knock about with decent folk who don't care about such nonsense.

Of course it is. Calling something by the wrong name.
Its not the wrong name according to alot of folk though.

You are right they can, just makes them look a bit stupid though doesn't it? Someone with a 1 litre Clio could call it a Ferrari formula 1 car, it wouldn't make them right though.

It is the wrong name though, whether they like it or not the correct name is Londonderry.

It is the birthplace of quite an eclectic mix including Darron Gibson, Martin O’Neill and Martin McGuinness, not to mention he who divides opinions, the non-poppy wearer himself.

Just a slight correction but Martin O'Neill's from Kilrea in the County not Derry City itself.

Pc Duff likes to be controversial.

Actually I think he's openly admitted in other threads he just doesn't like Irish people. Think he had some really bad experiences in Dublin or something.

There was a thread on here back a few months about the Orange Order marching through Sunderland and I noticed he was one of the few people who defended them. I guess his experiences of visiting Ireland were so bad its seemingly converted him to loyalism.

Well then he’s working for the right organisation then. Probably be chief inspector of the Met very soon....

Well that’s just a load of bollocks isn’t it?
I have a few really good friends who are Irish, so that blows your first theory out of the water.
Dublin is a shithole, I will stand by that opinion all day long.
Converted to Loyalism? Just because I don’t have an issue with an historic organisation doing what they have done for centuries that makes me converted to loyalism?

Londonderry, famously the only word with 6 silent letters at the start.
Don't let @Hbk69 see this. If he can't understand that Spurs is short for Tottenham Hotspur, this will make his head explode!

Do you also call Cardiff “diff”? Clown

It’s not the name of it is it?
The first reference to Londonderry/Derry was in the 6th century when a monastery was discovered called Doire which is gaeglie for Derry. It wasn't until the 15th century and the Plantation of Ulster that Derry was renamed Londonderry.

And you'll 100% wrong. Dublin is a fine city and we welcome everyone. Even bigoted policeman who still think it's 1970.

There is a boarding school in Derry (St Columbs) that has had two nobel prize winners in it among those who attended (John Hume and Seamus Heaney - regarded as the greatest poet in the the last 50 years or so). Martin O'Neill, Darren Gibson, Brian Friel among others).

There were attempts to make Seamus Heaney Poet Laureate, but he turned it down with the infamous verse:

Be advised my passport's green.
No glass of ours was ever raised
to toast the Queen.

For the record, he had nothing against the Queen and did actually toast her, sitting at the same table for the State banquet when the Queen visited Ireland for the first time a few years ago.

Giving us all a reminder of how life used to be, of course the fact it is happening at all in the current climate tells its own story.

Today is a very significant day in Ireland's (and Britain for that matter) history. Today is the 100th Anniversary of the sitting of the first Dail in Dublin.

It also marks the start of the Irish War of Independence when two RIC officers were shot dead in the Soloheadbeg, Tipperary by IRA volunteers (notably Dan Breen, who back then was a terrorist and is now a patriot!)

Today is a significant day for Irish Republicans.

Interesting Historical reference, thank you.

Nah, it’s shit.

It's probably similar to folk from Middlesbrough referring to their hometown as Boro, except that the people living in boro aren't quite as inclined to murder, torture or kneecap each other over such trivia

And what better way to celebrate it than a good old traditional Irish car bombing eh!
