By the same measurement theres plenty of Sunderland support in the south Durham areas closer to Darlington.
It never ceases to astound though why so many get exercised and distressed by the subject. Geography and history being so fluid & temporary and all that. Anyway we are all Northumbrians in the truest sense of a fixed regional identity.

Definitely possible in the NE with a trained ear.
There's a difference between parts of Newcastle and Gateshead for example. Lee Clark has an accent that no one from Gateshead would.
