Durham mags.......

I have mates in Washington, whose accents are completely different to mine and grew up 5minutes from me. All down to where families originate from. Mine from Farra, Grindon, Barnes etc, there's from low fell, Felling etc. There's one in particular who I've heard on a regular basis, his "Geordie" accent turns up a few notches when it's owt to do with footy. Very odd behaviour and gets called the professional Geordie. My accent has much more of a mackem twang to it than most people from Washington, all down to all my family being from Sunderland.
Never thought of that, might take Washington another 30 years+ to get its own accent.

Fair play mate. When did the two become, apparently, mutually exclusive? 90s?
Dunno mate, we used to chant “Geordies, Mackems, Geordies, Mackems “ before the 90’s. But as said, when Hall took over the mags, he used the Geordie nation, sporting club of Newcastle shite, whilst buying up basketball and ice hockey teams. Then Newcastle fans jumped on board and decided that you can’t be a Geordie unless you support them. You see they can shout at shops and change history

I honestly don't know why you engage with him mate. He's nothing more than a poundshop Sima.

He claims he wants debate then asks a direct question about Northumberland Sunderland supporters being as bad as Durham Mags.

When I give an answer he can't handle all attempts at 'debate' are over

if my mother in law was still alive...God rest her soul....she would clip you around the lughole...she was a Maddison/McKie

Our family were Eglon and McKean from the same area ;)

And a corly worly for tha bairn

The thing is back in the day people from outside the area would hear your accent and ask if you are a Geordie and you would just reply yes. now I have to reply with yes, a Sunderland supporting Geordie.
That fucks with their heads
I just say I'm a geordie with sense. Most people just go "aah you support Sunderland "

My last say on the matter:

'Geordie 'was regularly used to describe a pitman during the nineteenth century and during much of the earlier part of the twentieth century it was applied to most natives of the North East.

An extensive series of monthly magazines published from 1887 to 1891 entitled the Monthly Chronicle of North Country Lore and Legend explored the region’s history and heritage in depth and uses the term Geordie more than 30 times.

Several of the ‘Geordies’ described are not resident in Tyneside and include ‘Geordies’ from the mining district north east of Durham city, the Herrington area of Sunderland and Castle Eden on the Durham coast. It was clear that at time Geordie was by a no means a term confined to a native of Tyneside let alone Newcastle.

And I rest my case M'Lord.

Ffs the river wear runs through Durham not the tyne . Most Durham mags are from the keegan era onwards , in the war they would have been deserters

Geordies are Newcastle area it’s not rocket science , and if you weren’t born in Tyneside or live there then no way can you say you’re a Geordie ffs it’s embarrassing

Durham as in Co Durham ?
There’s a huge difference
North Durham as in Stanley borders Gateshead & has always had a majority of mag support or Durham City which has traditionally always had a majority SAFC stronghold
Nothing more worse than a Stanley mag.

Luckily I don’t have much of an accent, you all sound like thick cünts to be honest.
Unlike you without a regional accent, who probably is thick as two short planks by the sound of it

That was early 90’s as well. I think it was until 93 when one ball marketed the term ’geordie’.

Nothing wrong with Northumberland based Sun’land supporters. As passionate about Sun’land as you’ll find.

To be fair, the word "Geordie", is only a word. If people like to read more into this word, preferring to associate it with being from a certain area, supporting a certain team and believing they are part of something almost spiritual, thats up to them. "Special" people, providing special entertainment for the rest of the nation.
