Doubt itDefinitely possible in the NE with a trained ear.
There's a difference between parts of Newcastle and Gateshead for example. Lee Clark has an accent that no one from Gateshead would.
What about Sunderland supporters who live in Byker![]()
This topic causes a lot of upset normally. I'm a Geordie. I hate the term 'Mackem' - it was a term of attempted slur by people with a Tyneside accent. I remember when we sang "Geordie Boys" "We're Geordies, we're mental, we're off wa fkin heads" etc etc etc. The term 'Mackem' has grown to be used now by a younger generation who believe it is a term to identify with Sunderland.
My Granda would say we were all Geordies (newcastle, Sunderland, Durham & some of Northumberland), the way to differentiate would be Tynesider or Wearsider or Durham lad etc. BTW he was a pitman from Silksworth.
Not a popular post I imagine, but stop letting Mags steal our identity man.
I've supported SAFC since 1969, was born in Newcastle to parents from Sunderland and Durham and brought up in Northumberland. I'm a Geordie and tell anyone I meet abroad that 'Mackems' don't exist - it's a Mag term ! Tin hat on![]()
I know a few actual geordies who aren’t bad. Every single mag I know of personally from outside the city - Seaham, Durham, Hartlepool, Sedgefield, Coxhoe etc. are wankers of the highest calibre.
Yes they are. Thats because most of them jumped ship during keegans wankathon, whereas the Northumberland lads have honoured their family ties and stayed loyal to the red n whites.
We are going about this the wrong way and playing into NUFC hands with the anti geordie thing- the mags hate to see geordie sunderland supporters-its like their own have turned- we should promote this- there used to be a gateshead geordies flag with safc on it in the southstand - mags hated that
I've said, for years, that we should sing the old 'Geordie' songs especially in televised games, had very little positive response tbh.
I remember being on the terraces at Blackburn when the whole Sunderland end sang 'Geordies', to the tune of Mull of Kintyre, for at least 30 minutes.
Great days![]()
It would kill the mags- in the game of divide and conquer they won- irreversible now the geordie/mag tag
@Reiver is spot on with thisThat's how we referred to ourselves in those days.
It wasn't until John Hall, and his pathetic Geordie Nation shite, that things started to change.
@Reiver is spot on with this
I was born in Consett and was always brought up being a Geordie.
We went two miles to Shotley, crossedthe river and we were in Northumberland
I’m 60 now and supported Sunderland all my life. ( my uncle was Len Shackletons best man so the family loyalty shifted at that point)
I now live in Devon and still get either “Geordie” or “Mackem”
I answer to both.
By the way anyone got a Plymouth ticket spare
Is that Wayne the punk.I'm from Allendale Cottages, near Medomsley, near Consett and born in Shotley Bridge hospital.
I have a great Sunderland supporting mate living in Exeter.
I can help you with a ticket![]()
You're wrong, I know a good lot of lads fans from Northumberland an lot a good mags from NW Durham..The way I see it is, if your from anywhere in County Durham you should support Sunderland...yeah of course there are plenty of family ties that change it but if not and your a mag your just small minded. As in “that’s just the team of the north east”
It’s my opinion. I’m not saying I’m right but it’s very common in the north east that people who don’t follow football that much just support the mags and don’t really have an answer for it. Fine, it’s your choice who you support but many have the small minded answer somewhere along the lines of-“it’s just the team of the north east”You're wrong, I know a good lot of lads fans from Northumberland an lot a good mags from NW Durham..
I've never met anybody who has described NUFC as the NE team and I'm not a spring chicken and travelled quite a bit. It’s my opinion.
