Read the whole thread - plenty of posts saying that if people are following their club for family reasons then fair enough.I was born and bred in Newcastle and have a Geordie twang (obviously). It's my hometown and will always be home, despite living on Wearside now and supporting SAFC because of my old man. Am I not welcome?! There seems some fairly cut and dried opinions on who should be supporting who based on where they're from!!!
Is that Wayne the punk.
I think there are a few of us in the area
Peterlee James is down here

Interestingly I lived in Surrey/ Middlesex (Shepperton) for 30 years and fancied going back to one of your get togethers quite recently. I think it was the bloody hammering at Southampton.
Ironically I had a canny day out that day.

Doubt it
So your saying you can tell the difference between a resident of Ryton or Blaydon & Heburn or Jarrow ?
Agree with this. Lot of lukewarm football supporters in the NE support Newcastle, they are the default optionIt’s my opinion. I’m not saying I’m right but it’s very common in the north east that people who don’t follow football that much just support the mags and don’t really have an answer for it. Fine, it’s your choice who you support but many have the small minded answer somewhere along the lines of-“it’s just the team of the north east”
The majority don’t thoughDoesn't matter where in the NE you're born, you should support Sunderland imo. Just a better club with better fans and people.
Suppose one of the things i wanted to highlight in this post is the abandonment of individual towns identity in favour of a plastic stereotype 'geordie' by people not from Newcastle. This gives a false impression of the north east to the rest of country. Like everyone down south aren't cockneys, there's much more to it.
As people have pointed out plenty of geordies support Sunderland, and good on them. Just because someone supports Sunderland doesn't make them mackems, just like anyone from Durham supporting Newcastle doesn't make them geordies.....but the latter thinks it does, that's the difference
Excellent point and something many on here will fail to appreciate ...
... Janie Mitchell would understand and she rarely posts on here.

Are they worse than Sunderland supporters from Northumberland?
Theres a bloke in Stanhope supports Newcastle and the river Wear flows through his garden.Anyone ever met a mag from the villages surrounding Durham City that wasn’t a charva, scruff or a scratter? Me neither.
Aye but it’s clear as day it’s now a positive term for us as a group of people. Language is not
I live in Newcastle now and if anyone asks me, I’m proudly a Mackem.
I work directly with three mags. One from Penshaw, one from Washy and the other is Welsh.
All canny lads until they get on the topic of football and more than one of them is around. Absolutely fine and reasonable when it’s just one of them talking about football.
Yes.
They don’t put on daft accents or attempt to forge a non-existent link to the city itself beyond support for the club.
Nobody can ever say any SAFC fan is in it for the glory and though your lot have won nowt, you got plenty of bandwagon jumpers from Durham/Washington.
