New Music Releases Thread

Some blasts from my past there. Clutch, Everlast and Spiritualized for me this week.
Not that they appeal to most of the posters on this thread, but I’d also completely forgotten that the “new” Suicidal Tendencies album is out today, although it’s essentially a re-recording of a mid-90s Mike Muir solo album.

Today is also the release date for the Converse/Suicidal Tendencies shoes/clothing collab. I’m assuming it won’t sell very well in the UK so hope I might get some bargains in a few months because the full range is in the UK version of the Converse website.

Serial session-drummer and ex-member of the Wallflowers during the 00s, Fred Etringham, has released a solo album of covers (with guest appearances by Ben Kweller, Casey Musgraves and Sheryl Crow) which I’ve been enjoying a lot this morning.

A few of the tracks I’m not familiar with the originals but have enjoyed his reworking if the John Prine and Lemonheads tracks.

Edit - he’s recorded under the name The Get You and album is called “Take Cover”

Slowly catching up with the last couple of weeks' new releases, along with a lot of TV. Have watched 7 episodes of Masterchef Australia in the last 36 hours, along with a load of other stuff. Anyway back to the music so far:

The Spiritualized album is fundamentally so marvellous that it should be called Marvin. "The Morning After" is the best thing I'll hear this year... and the rest runs it close. Jason Pearce's best since "Ladies and Gentlemen...". He hints at it being the last Spiritualized album in the newish Uncut.

Aside from the likely album of the year...

Iron & Wine: good EP. You kind of know what you're getting with Sam Beam, Lovely vocals, well produced, good songs intriguing lyrics but, on the down side, it all sounds like it come from any Iron & Wine album/EP in the last, well, forever.
Waxahatchee: a departure. This is mostly piano based ballads and is quite, quite lovely.
Swamp Dogg: an old soul/R&B man gradually discovering new technology. There's a lot of autotune on this but you might expect that from an album called "Love, Loss and Autotune". It's fun but kind of slight.
Idles: they're bloody excellent, aren't they? Intelligeny, witty, politicised, fun punk/hardcore. One of Britain's best bands currently.
Teleman: rant coming on. It really annoys me that a Gallagher can put out a song so pedestrian that it's called "Pelican Crossing" and have a top 10 hit, that Josh Widdicombe's ugly, less talented but more ginger cousin can piss a hit single and Adele can fart a number 1 (when it's easier to fart a number 2) that a band like Teleman who are enjoyable, lovely and fun and, most of all, construct some cracking pop tunes and get bugger all in the way of mainstream attention (6 Music aprart) when they should be on Top of the Pops and having articles in Smash Hits and Look In. Album's quite good anyway...

Baxter Dury releasing new album in October. A collaboration with Ettienne De Crécy and Delilah Holliday. Single from it released today is great.

Seems like a busy week for new stuff, in terms of number. There are releases tomorrow from 6lack, Alejandro Escavedo, Ann Wilson, Aphex Twin (an EP), Asleep At The Wheel, Bob Moses, Brandon Coleman, Carrie Underwood, Dilly Dally, Good Charlotte, Guerilla Toss, Hawkwind, Jungle, Living With Lions, Low, Lyrics Born, Monster Truck, Noname, Orbital, Pale Waves, Paul Weller, Richard Thompson, Sandro Perri, Snakes in Paradise, Steven Page, The Chills, The Dirty Nil, Thrice, Tony Bennett & Diana Krall, Tori Kelly, Uriah Heep, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Willie Nelson (doing Sinatra covers), The Goon Sax and Dawn Landes.

Low are the obvious standout for me but there's a good half dozen or so other things there that I'm interested in.

Toby Hay and Jim Ghedi have an album out together on 12 October. Very exciting for anyone who has actually heard of them.

And Epic45 have a new one out 28 September.

Low for me also but it looks like quite a departure from ones and sixes which i thought was sublime. New stuff seems a lot more downbeat.

Also really hoping Orbital release a belter and i'll give Weller a go for old times sake.

Richard Thompson and The Chills are two I'm looking forward to. Supposed to be RT's best in years and The Chills have always been big faves of mine. Also, The Goon Sax and Dawn Landes seem interesting. Hoping the Orbital album is a cracker as well.

Quite looking forward to the Goon Sax. Their debut wasn't up to much imo but showed some potential.

From first listens to the Orbital album I'm not overly impressed. Reminds me of The Altogether, thrown together at the end of a record deal.

Aphex Twin, Collapse sounds very good

Went to see Soccer Mommy last night at the Scala, they/she was excellent. Sound was as good as you're going to get at a venue of that size as well, which almost, almost makes up for it being six bastard quid for a tin of Red Stripe.

Hadn’t realised there was a new Thom Yorke track out, it’s a bit magic

The Goon Sax record is just....well....dull

I’ll echo Spiritualised being a cracker, also a big fan of Mogwai and Idles records (albeit the latter are a bit loud live for my tastes)

Other interesting recent releases include Mothers and Terry and the debut single from International Teachers of Pop (some folks from Moonlandingz)
