Seems a bit churlish to say the Council had no involvement. They decided the process by setting up the committee, the terms of reference, decided who sat on it and did not have to accept its recommendations. They could and should have asked them to come back with something else. How poor were the other alternatives if these were the three 'best' options? Apart from that the Council had nothing to do with it.
The name is a missed opportunity which is a real shame any links with Wearside are contrived.

'The list of possible names had been agreed by an independent panel, comprising of members of the Sunderland community and business fraternity'.

Who came up with the original list from which these 3 names were shortlisted? Who convened the panel? Why has the original list never been made public? Why has there been no more response to the overwhelming ridicule and incredulity at the shortlist? Why did less than 1% of the population of Sunderland bother to vote?

Ill tell you why....because Sunderland Council had the name chosen from Day 1 and didn't give a flying fuck what the general public thought or cared.

And if you believe otherwise, then you're as gullible as the biggest berk on this board himself ....and there's quite a few contenders for that honour for sure.

What

what would you call it.serious question.

My choice would have been the Sir Joseph Swan bridge. He was even born right next to the South end of the thing for gods sake.

You've got issues mate. The fact that an independent panel gave a choice of 3 names for the public of Sunderland to vote for YET the council wanted this name from the off beggars belief tbh.

Now how is that Doxy gatehouse getting on?

Why do you think it amusing to mock the last original piece of a rich shipbuilding legacy that many of us are immensely proud of?

How thoroughly disrespectful to all those thousands of men and women and their families, who passed through that gatehouse and gave their working lives to help make Sunderland great.

All things aside, you're an absolute f***ing lowlife for that.

So moshy now thinks the population of sunderland is over a million people:lol:

Think i'll add that one to the list of lies he's told

Fuck me, my mistake, it's closer to 1.6% that voted for this ridiculously pretentious name. Some endorsememt that mind....the general public were so obviously enthused and captivated by the choices on offer

WAW

Stick to chucking your duds at gadgies you paranoid berk
How utterly predictable :D:D:D:D

I've quoted a newspaper man and you're calling people names. You're letting your rant get in the way of common sense. Put the keyboard down and go for a walk or something.

True, they decided the process but they didn't pick the name. The panel was made up of a diverse bunch of journalists, sunderland notaries and artsy fartsy people....they chose the names, not the council. If the council had sent them back to come up with something else it rather defeats the purpose and is in fact the council choosing the name.

The popular narrative amongs the pissy pants terminal moaners is that it's all the councils fault, completely ignoring that the big achievement is a fantastic bridge which will unlock land for development and massively improve transport links

In other words they spun off the responsibility to a "safe" subcommittee of their choosing which provided these names subject to approval allowing 1.6% of the population to vote for the best of the three.

WDSC can then say it was the people's choice.

Democracy in action right there
