Amazon echo

Last year, police in Bentonville, Arkansas, investigating the death of Victor Collins, demanded that Amazon turn over audio recordings that may have been made by an Amazon Echo device in his home.

Amazon initially resisted the warrant, but in March, James Bates, charged with Collins' murder, consented [PDF] to the release of the data in the hope it would exonerate him. Bates has pleaded not guilty.

This appears to have been the first publicly reported case involving the interrogation of a digital personal assistant system. It won't be the last.

In a paper [PDF] to be presented at the Digital Forensic Research Workshop (DFRWS) in Austin, Texas, next month, researchers from the Center for Information Security Technologies at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea, describe software they developed for gathering cloud and client-side data from the Echo/Alexa ecosystem through undocumented APIs.

The software, dubbed CIFT – Cloud-based IoT Forensic Toolkit – is designed to find data on servers and mobile apps that might not be available to investigators.

CIFT was developed in Python and the researchers say they plan to release the source code at a later date.

The researchers – Hyunji Chung, Jungheum Park, and Sangjin Lee – used the Charles web debugging proxy to discover the private API endpoints used by Amazon's system. They did so using a session created with valid credentials; CIFT isn't intended as a tool for hacking accounts.

"[W]e can acquire forensically meaningful native artifacts from the Alexa, such as registered user accounts, Alexa-enabled devices, saved Wi-Fi settings (including unencrypted passwords), linked Google calendars, and installed skill lists that may be used to interact with other cloud services," the paper says.

The researchers observe that through the API, they found a lot of JSON data related to cards, activities, media, notifications, compatible devices, and todos (text conversion between DOS and UNIX formats) with UNIX timestamps.

"This may provide sources of evidence that allow reconstruction of user activities with a time zone identified by device-preference API," they state in the paper.

They also found data that includes a URL pointing to user voice recordings stored in the cloud, making it possible to download those voice files using the utterance API.

Top piece of kit for us, works so well. We have the echo and sound is loud as, never needed up at top volume levels as too loud.

Uses -
Alexa add xyz to shopping list (so many times you think I need to get that but then forget). You get the list on your alexa app, so check it when out shopping. Used constantly.

The timers and reminders, used daily to remind to do things (cooking, washing, other shit). My memory is gash so this is marvellous.

When's the chicken going to be ready, "Alexa how longs left on timer".

Alexa what time is it in 'location'. I work from home and have customers in all places, just ask and then know whether it's a good time to call.

Alexa Is it going to rain today, knowing whether it good for the kids to wear certain clothes.

Alexa play something to chill out to, or play house classics or play my mates dj set or whatever. The music you can start from your mobile app too, so can be sat on the bog and think oo I will have a bit of bob and set it away and crank up the volume so I can hear upstairs.

Get up on a morning and ask alexa for my news, I get the latest transfer gossip, sky news, sky sports news, us news and discovery shorts.

Alexa ask just eat to reorder my last indian meal.

The wife is always losing her phone in the house and never has the volume on, nee bother, Alexa ask TrakR to find my mobile and it makes her iphone play the sound whe it's lost.

Great when you have family gatherings as well as people will ask her to play their favourite music or ask her for jokes and whatnot.

You can say famous film lines and she will follow up with the next line, like Alexa I am your father and she will say Noooo (star wars if anyone doesn't know).

Loads of stuff man.

And people sayin you could use your mobile for thing, I haven't got or want my mobile glued to me all the f***ing time man. It the fact that its all wireless, you dont need to look for something to sort whatever, she is just there for you.

The other thing is playing music on your mobile and it burns the battery down and sounds shite.

you need to link to a Bluetooth speaker though and doesn't look as nice as the larger unit
No you don't, it has a speaker, just not as good quality as the echo.

you could link a DOT to the Sonos.. would depend if you are a Prime member

wife uses the echo in the kitchen as a timer and alarm a lot of the time
No linkage to sonos yet from Echo or Dot. It's in the pipeline apparently.

But I have things like that anyway. A watch or phone for a timer, MP3 player with my playlist.

You have been conned by Amazon marketing mate :lol:

ps my mam has one that my brother insisted on buying for her as he has one and they are brilliant. Does her head in, my dads head in and mine when i visit.
Mine turns the telly on and switches channel for me with voice control. Which is really handy when I'm feeding six month old twins. :)

It is, for spoken feedback, no issues at all.

If I want music I route the command to play Spotify on another system which plays through proper speakers.

Wasn’t impressed with echo as a speaker, nor th google home tbh.
This. I play music through my sonos which is better than Echo anyway. Use my dot for other stuff.

The new sonos is out next week and has the alexa voice control with it.

Ive just finished their beta program for it and ended up with 2 free play 1's for completing a few questionaires every week.

Not sure what to make of it to be honest, kids love it though

I'd rather get Google Home. Because it's tied into Google's unrivalled search engine and Google Assistant it's just better as a personal assistant IMHO. Not to mention it works with the rest of the ecosystem like Google Calendar, gMail and a whole host of other stuff.

I got the email as a registered Sonos user and thought fuck it I don't need it, then saw the begging for codes posts on HUKD and got a dose of the mustn't miss out shit and ordered it.

Jeez man, get a room!! ;)

The Dot is worth having just to hear my 4 year old daughter asking for a certain song "please" then "thank you" when it's played. Mind, she gets shirty with Alexa if it doesn't understand her

Got it too cheers.

What's the difference between the echo and the dot?

Quality of sound. Worth paying extra for the echo imo. We have both and sound on dot is shit when you compare it to the echo.

We love our echo and dot. I have audible and prime music account and it's so handy to ask it to play my audio book or certain song if I'm pottering around in a room for a few minutes. Easy connects to phone so I can listen to podcasts at the drop of a hat any time.
