Dunkirk

Humbling interview, I think my generation just can't comprehend the idea of war and loss on that scale. One day you're with your pals, the next half of them are gone forever.

I've been listening to Anthony Beevor's "The Second World War", which by the way is excellent and I'd heartily recommend to anyone with an interest in WW2, and the extent of casualties is just insane. The Soviets, for example, suffered almost 500,000 killed or missing just taking back Stalingrad. Half a million men in one battle.
This. We don't know were born, thank fuck. Watched it second time and this time with my daughter. She is going to watch saving private Ryan next week.

Have to say it was even better the second time around.

Dunkirk 6/10 - Really disappointed

+ good opening scene until he reaches beach
+ Spitfire scenes (apart from ridiculous ending scene)
+ cinematography

- scale downplayed massively
- no character development / attachment to characters
- incredibly dull first hour
- bloodless / disney like war scenes on the beach
- over reliance on hans zimmer score / facial expressions
- dialogue extremely poor uncharacteristically for Nolan
That's me out.

Oh I dunno? Dads army?

After that though and then the grounded boat there was no sense of the impending capitulation if they didn't get off the beach.

i do kind of agree with you - but he was already running 3 stories (the Mole, The Sea, the Air) which all interweaved with each other

adding an extra one about whats happening in the town with the Dunkirk defenders does'nt add anything to the story he's telling. If the Germans arrive all 3 stories would be kaput, and if they dont arrive you dont really need to know how or why

besides, ask a random off the street who does'nt know much about ww2 about dunkirk and they'll probs just say 'little ships, men off the beach', not valiant defence by thousands of men who spent the next 5 years in camps to enable their mates to survive (although thinking about it, that would make a canny film)

I went to see it at an IMAX cinema last night. It is a beautifully shot movie but the scale of what happened just isn't visible at all. It looked like there were no more than circa 3,000 on the beaches and the flotilla appeared to be about twelve members of the Cowes sailing club. In the modern era that could have been made far more realistic in terms of numbers. The intertwining story was good and the acting pretty spot on, but the bit where they remained in the boat that was getting shot up appeared a bit far fetched with them all trying to plug holes. I would have thought the instinct to defend yourself and fire back would have kicked in, albeit I realise they were trying to pretend that they weren't there.

The aerial dog fights did give to a feeling of what flying a spitfire must have been like...........the cinematography was impressive for that. The mixed up weather was all a bit odd......it appeared to be beautiful calm seas from the plane scenes but at the shore it wasn't anything like that at all.

Ahh, of course, it said it under each heading.
I didn't twig until I read the wiki article after :lol:
I'd seen the labels but thought they were points in time rather than durations if that makes sense.

Makes it a bit more interesting than when I watched it!

The bit about that I didn't understand was they said they were being usees for target practice, but then the water was flooding in so obviously that part was getting submerged underwater, and they kept shooting. Why would they be shooting at the submerged part they couldn't see?

Great film though, enjoyed it.

Interesting article here

The real photo of the men lined up does indicate the scale of the film is the same as reality. It says many men were hiding is sand dunes so not all 440k were lined up on the beach at once.

Also a reference to a resource that Nolan used while researching the film, haven't read it yet but wonder if the target practice part of the film is mentioned.

Last link I posted confirms a spitfire did land on the beach and the pilot, a New Zealander, later escaped on a ship.

Thanks, good reading that

Thanks for that, very interesting.

Well I thought it was a masterpiece.

9/10 for me.

I know IMAX is a bit more expensive but try and see it there if at all possible.

I saw it on IMAX and the air scenes were great.

Went to see it at my local cinema in Whitley Bay. Only holds around 30 people and I thought it was great. Came out knackered as it was all action from the start.

Obviously with it being a 12 I thought it seemed to lose the realism of war a bit but thought it got the point across really well.

Must have been a nightmare for those there.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head for me.

The trailer was better than the film.
