daft as it may sound i know of 2 lads that are thinking of getting a rickshaw business off the ground when all these improvements are done, getting punters from the empire end of the town to sunniside and top of holmeside etc.
Works well in Edinburgh like.

We will never have a hope for change in Sunderland City Centre if people keep talking it down like on this thread.

If we keep holding these negative attitudes and take our business elsewhere, then how can things ever change? I know Sunderland is in many ways a shadow of its former self, but I don't give up my inner belief that this place can be better and can change, for the better. For example, people are laughing at the idea of a "cultural quarter", but why is that funny? The old fire station is being rennovated, we have a new music centre which will be built next to it soon, the Empire Theatre.

Have some pride in your city man, it's not about political parties or colours, it's about being Sunderland through and through.
Agreed. There are plenty of snobs on here who love to knock Sunderland and something happens they are quick to turn their nose up.

Also the Peacock (Derry) will be putting on bands upstairs. They add up to a big step forward for live music, dance and theatre in that small area. What is that if not culture?

Exactly, the fact that people laugh at the word "culture" being associated with Sunderland shows how much ambition and optimism we lack.

I believe Sunderland can become a city of culture and even win that bid in 2022; if we believe it, we can become it and then other people might just change the way they view the place as well.

It's could be a cracking part of Sunderland as could Sunniside.

When the Vaux site is up it will really inject life into the city.

Why not? We already have a pisspot quarter,Josephs,Jamesons area.
It feels like a greasy and slippery hole down holmside and park Lane the last few times I've been up.

And when was holmside made 2 way? Nearly got flattened!

Don't let Steven fletcher on it.

It's pretty grim, how did you nearly get flattened mate was it traffic or one of the resident piss heads?;)

Exactly. In space of a very very short walk there will be the theatre with the biggest stage between Leeds and Edinburgh which is regularly home to touring West End shows, an £8 million quid renovated building with dance studios, Live Theatre, a heritage centre cafe and restaurant in it, a 450 seater/700 standing music auditorium, and a music/spoken word/comedy/theatre performance space above the Peacock, some decent pubs/bars, and more plans for future developments too.

And people piss and moan and talk it down. Nothing that could realistically happen in Sunderland would be good enough for them. Nothing.

It really could and should be a great area of the city centre. Let's hope we all use it more and make a success of the place

Must be a nightmare for the lorries trying to unload at the Empire (same for anyone waiting to pick people up from there), road makes perfect sense. If this was anywhere else it would hardly be news but people on here just want to moan.

Can you imagine the amount of traffic/people around this area if there was gig on at the auditorium and a show on at the Empire at the same time, the access will definitely be needed IMO.

1.5 million for one of the biggest initiatives the place has seen for year!

That Bakerloo Tube extension is costing £3 billion. I know I'm comparing us to London, but we wonder why this city gets further behind the rest of the country....
