High Street West encompasses much more than the small area you mention. It's from the roundabout past the Travel Lodge and all the way up to Silksworth Row. I actually was drawing attention to the disgraceful state of the stretch of the buildings and shops (or lack of them) up High Street West from John Street or Fawcett Street up to Keel Way.

Aye but this thread is about the 'cultural quarter' which is where this new road is going.

Isnt this just adding a road from the bridge so nissan can use the port?

Or will it ease conjestion when they move the civic to the vaux site?

Yeah lets all be really positive...... errrrrrrrm... what shall I be positive about?
Plenty! But you're clearly one of the 'glass half empty' majority in this city, which is the reason hardly anything succeeds, but that's great for you lot as you can say 'I told you so' when things do fail!

I think a nice swimming pool / leisure centre would be canny right beside the Bridges shopping centre.
Just like the one that was there...but was hardly ever used and because of that started to fall to bits? It was an age thing, kids have moved on...not like us older generation who used this as their main weekend entertainment.

Strange how people moan about lack of this type of facility when they're removed, but I bet they hardly used it when it was there.

As long as the area doesn't become a car haven. Allowing pedestrians to easily cross from bar to bar will contribute hugely to the success of the area.

Would be great to see the road space reduced and given to the bars/restaurants as outdoor seating areas during the warmer months.

You seem to have a massive chip on your shoulder about cars. Can you not afford one?

We will never have a hope for change in Sunderland City Centre if people keep talking it down like on this thread.

If we keep holding these negative attitudes and take our business elsewhere, then how can things ever change? I know Sunderland is in many ways a shadow of its former self, but I don't give up my inner belief that this place can be better and can change, for the better. For example, people are laughing at the idea of a "cultural quarter", but why is that funny? The old fire station is being rennovated, we have a new music centre which will be built next to it soon, the Empire Theatre.

Have some pride in your city man, it's not about political parties or colours, it's about being Sunderland through and through.
