You think he's indispensable? I'm not saying drop him, just that the team would cope without him. Are you saying we'd lose this series if he got injured and didn't play? No.

There's a difference between important and indispenable

Yes. He is head and shoulders above every other middle order batsman in the country. I mean, absolutely miles ahead. Until Bairstow/Taylor or whoever is next in line steps up and proves themselves, he is absolutely critical to England.

I think we have batsmen who can win a test and batsmen who can save a test. KP is probably the only one who can, in the blink of an eye, change a test.

The Aussies are clearly the weaker team but now need to accept they will lose lots of games and not respond by changing the team every match on the back of it.

Since that's not likely, expect more changes ... Rogers and Agar for starters. I'd say they were Lehman's picks and they haven't scored runs or taken wickets.

They could change the lot of them though ... But best bet for them is probably find a settled team now for the return series that can compete. Do they have any good young batters coming through? Did they fast track the leg spinner to citizenship then realise he was rubbish?

Australia now are like England in the 90s - lots of very average players and the selectors are panicking and showing no faith in them...

1993 Ashes, we used 24 players including 7 debutants!

They should stick with their pool of quicks. They haven't been great over here but they are young and can do the business. Siddle is very good, Pattison bowled some superb spells against quality opposition (SA) and Starc and Bird are also useful.

i used to work with his mam (at the school he went to).

fascinating, i know...

Sky's coverage of cricket is absolutely top class, I don't think there's any sport out there with such top class pundits and analysis.

It's quality isn't it? I think the analytical pieces they do on a daily basis are wonderful for youngsters watching. Now Gooch on talking about opening the batting. Absolute Masterclass

Also think Ward will be Gowers replacement within the next 10 years as the head of the sky team

Ward's growing on me a lot actually. I used to think he was dull but he's pretty good now.

What a great day yesterday was, the aussies had no answers

Surely we have declared ?

I can't believe we're going to piss about batting on this morning.

It's f***ing arrogant TBH. Let's just say the Aussies put up a fantastic rearguard (something like Atherton's 185* in Joburg) and we need time tomorrow to bowl them out and we've wasted overs today letting Root get a statistical bauble.

Let's get f***ing bowling. As much as I want us to win, if we bat on now a very small part of me would find it amusing if we ran out of time with Australia 8 or 9 down come stumps tomorrow night.

Behave man you negative nelly.

We're going to win and win handsomely, doesn't matter if we declare now or in an hours time. Let the bastards rot in the field some more.

I agree with the sentiment. It's just that there's a danger that we will rot in our armchairs waiting !

Most probably but there are no guarantees.

I say give ourselves the maximum possible chance which means getting out there bowling.

Let's face it, if Root was out last night would we have batted on? Arguably not so these overs are playing for Root's career stats, not us winning. Any runs we score here are pointless in the context of the game.
