But if Roy could not succeed with that sort of cash, why do some think he can be some sort of white knight figure who saves the season?
Thought Roy deserved his own thread, as many were shouting him out as a potential saviour
I actually think Sunderland then would be an easier sell to a player than Sunderland at the moment. It was an up and coming ambitious outfit splashing the cash, whereas the club is seen as perennial strugglers at the momentHe did succeed. We had a championship squad. We stayed in the league and he got off to a great start beating Spurs 1-0 at home.
Moyes still hasn't won a game despite thinking it was a good idea to sign players like Ndong (breaking our transfer record in the process).
You're comparing the signings of an established Premier League club with a newly promoted club that struggled to attract players. It's completely different.
You also left out that Leane had a bid accepted for Baines, he was close to signing but Everton came in at the last minute.
Don't think that there is too much wrong with that list given where we were at the time - some decent names in there that served us well. If we did a top 10 worst Safc transfers deals of the last ten years I can't see any/ many of Keanes signings making that list...In 2007/08 Keane spent 43.8 million, which is way more than Moyes got to spend in this close season, not allowing for the Sky money inflation!
Kind of puts the 'massive outlay' in the summer in perspective.

The point is not the signings (he made some solid acquisitions) the point was the budgetary conditions then compared to nowDon't think that there is too much wrong with that list given where we were at the time - some decent names in there that served us well. Maybe, but Sunderland under Quinn was an ambitious project that was looking to be building towards the top of the premier league. And Roy was able to get loads of good loans/signings from Man UtdI disagree. Foreign players didn't even know who Sunderland were, not to mention we were known for being a yo-yo club.
Promoted teams are always more likely to be relegated the following season hence our only option at the time was to sign domestic based players for over-inflated fees on high salaries in order to attract them to the club/area.
Baird turned us down around that time because his lass wanted the option to shop in London whenever she wanted.
Tbf I'd say Roy did succeed. We're an established prem club now but back then we had been relegated with a record lows points haul. He needed to build a squad to get us up and a squad to keep us up.
He successfully did both.
Love Keano me.
That's Mourinho being spiteful again :-D"And Roy was able to get loads of good loans/signings fromMan Utd..."
Same for Dave!....Love....McNair....
Indeed the current situation reminds me of Coventry City, who for years hung on by the skin of their teeth......
While Sunderland signed all those players, Moyes over at Everton signed:
17 March 2007 FW England Lukas Jutkiewicz England Swindon Town Undisclosed
4 July 2007 DF England Phil Jagielka England Sheffield United £4m
7 August 2007 DF England Leighton Baines England Wigan Athletic £5m
21 August 2007 GK Germany Stefan Wessels Germany 1. FC Köln Free
29 August 2007 FW Nigeria Yakubu Aiyegbeni England Middlesbrough £11.25m
14 January 2008 MF England Dan Gosling England Plymouth Argyle £1m
Baines and Jagielka are still first teamers......

Unadulterated bollocksThe only roy keane signing that worked was jonny evans and he was a loan.
The rest were a waste of fees and wages

Bollocks there were loads of effective signings - Jones, Malbranque, Connelly, Cisse, Edwards for starters. The only roy keane signing that worked was jonny evans and he was a loan.
