What has happened to Piston? Was a canny poster until a few months back. Colback seems to have disturbingly sent him over the edge

I didn't mean it to sound patronising but if i had £1 for every lower league player who was going to come in and take someone's shirt i'd pay for Borini myself.
I've said it many many times, the pecking order doesn't happen overnight. It's taken years to work itself out. The one thing i would say is if a team is totally missing a certain skill then a lower league player could come in and fill that area and hence the overall team performances.
However, comparing players on an individual one to one basis the pecking order wins nearly every time.

Anyway, this isn't really relative to the thread.

The people running this club need a huge shake up.
We need some personalities in there whose words have a bit of clout in the world of football. We need potential signings to be able to "buy into" the club. Not to mention the virtually non existent interface with the supporters.

This current set up is very flat, it's very grey and it's f**king clueless.

OK pal, what would you do to make things better and more importantly, WHO will execute your master plan (which you have not outlined to us)?

In a position to comment, are you?

What knowledge do you have of how the club is being run at the top level, and what experience do you have to know how it should be done?
Tbf we have been fined twice recently because of fuck ups in transfer dealings that really shouldnt have happened, so he does have point.

It's a start, but signing Borini isn't improving from last season. Even if we get Alonso in, we've still got the same squad.

We need another 5 quality signings on top of the 3 loanies from last season IMHO
If we took Poyet's time as manager and discounted PDCs disastrous time we would have been comfortably mid table. With the same squad we should have a decent season. It really is time to put trust in Gus, more than ever before.

It's always the same at this stage of the close season.

Granted there needs to be a significant improvement over last year (and others) but there's no point them all panicking.

Congerton must be given the opportunity to do his job which he must know means a competitive squad by end of August.

The reality is; a football fans patience is not directly proportional to the amount of time which may be required to address the root cause of a problem.

He's talking about lack of personality though. Surely giving bungs to agents and writing official documents in crayon is exactly the sort of thing the OP is after?

That does come across as a bit pessimistic like even though you're a new age hippy. "see positive energy comment"

You do make a couple of valid observations though.

It's very bad on my part to question a player before he's kicked a ball but when all the good ones have knocked us back it puts an element of doubt in there, just going off last season alone. We can't just keep on giving random hopefuls a chance indefinitely. Where does it all end?

The point i'm making about high turnover of players is extremely valid. We've seen how hard it is for this lot to get one of the f**kers over the line. That's a player who probably still has half his clothes and belongings in a house here. That's where hanging onto even a Phil Bardsley(i won't mention any others) buys us time to get enough players in.

Unless top players are knocking on your door to be in there just isn't enough time to scout and vet them properly then get deals done. It's not like we're the only club looking at them either. We could spend 6 weeks doing our homework properly only for another club to step in and steal the player away at the last minute.

Who else has knocked us back like?

Keeping someone like Phil was not an option for me like. He had to go.

I do trust Gus, but I don't buy into this "we have to accept there's no money" and we are little Sunderland, we shouldn't be aiming for the stars.

If we only buy the loan players from last season, we have stood still and not moved on.

Brown and Oshea are another season older and more injury prone, the midfield isn't any stronger IMO

I do think we could be stronger up front with a fully fit Fletcher and CW starting to show potential at the end of last season.

Still not convinced Short will give Gus anywhere near the funds to have a comfortable season. Just my opinion though!!

The solution can be summed up in two words:

'Wilkinson'
'Howard'

not necessarily in that order

Tbh only skim reading thread with being at work. But those 2 examples does suggest a lack of experience at the club, which I think Piston was alluding to. Mind those 2 examples could be a big wake up call to those at the top and hopefully correct procedures have been installed

Bardsley had major flaws but like it or not he played a positive contribution in us staying up. Vaughan and Gardner didn't get on the pitch enough to make a difference so by that definition they were worse than Bardsley.
I'd rather have a good core team and add a handful too it. This season we've lost a bit of our core and many of the loans. We're rebuilding from both ends. I suspect we'll be "maxing out" the loan card again so that side of things will start again next season.
The market for new signings is way to volatile and competitive to get 10 good ones across the line in one go.

Every year we need to build on bedrock, not sand.

We've not had bedrock for a while though. Successive managers have not acquired the right players.

Loan signings are not as bad as made out.

It's 21st of July. The season now starts in less than a month's time and we still haven't spent any money. We' ve brought in no quality and the Borini saga will likely run on for another fortnight.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with them if they're added to a solid core of players, alongside one or two good signings.
The problem is we're having to rebuild front, back, sides and centre. In my opinion there just isn't enough time in the day to do this job properly, even if we were in charge of our own destiny.
There's so many other factors regards signing good players that we're largely a passenger on our own bus.

I understand what you say. However, the day after a £14m bid for Borini has been confirmed I find it strange that you question whether Short will back Gus. That is proof there is money.

I really sick of hearing about the lack of ambition from our club just because were not going out and making 15 signings!! If use all notice twice we have went out in recent season and signed a ridiculous amount of shite this is why the clubs in the state it is if you ask me gus and congerton are being wise and not rushing into just buying fir the shake of it. I'm happy with the buys we have made so far and I'm still very hopeful of the borini deal. I think we need alonso back aswell but I'm not worried at all. I think if you look back or even look at how other clubs are run I think ours isn't being run areet in all fairness
