I remember when we’d just bought Benno and Howie this guy just in front of me started calling an opposition black player all sorts of racist shite. Challenged him. He turned round and I recognised him as a Chief Inspector. Pleasantly surprised when he didn’t set his boys in blue on me and instead apologised and agreed he was out of order.

Just remembered something I saw Huddersfield away in 1995. Was only 13 but coming away from the ground after the match a black lad was getting pushed about, I genuinely can’t remember who was giving him hassle but he looked at a copper for some help whose response was ‘come on lads, leave the n****r alone’. If I saw that now no chance I’d do fuck all.

Now that homosexuality is no longer a criminal offence and all are equal under the law why should any homosexual object to being called one if he/she is?

I probably wouldn't challenge someone at a match for shouting abuse at a player. Getting my teeth knocked out by some hillbilly pisshead for shouting racism isn't going to help anyone.
If it'll help somebody I'll say something, but at a match it's pretty pointless. The player is in no danger and probably can't hear the fucker anyway. You're just putting yourself in harms way.

No I wouldn’t for the fear of violence, I tried questioning someone’s decision to stand in front of me yesterday preventing me from seeing our second goal and was greeted with a mouthful of foul mouthed abuse, his parting shot was “ aye but I saw the goal and you didn’t w***er”

For racist abuse I definitely would and have in the past. As a non white person you won’t believe people saying it 2 seats away.
When you challenge them and they say “no mate, I don’t mean you, your sound etc”.
I have complained to stewards when I’ve been with my son at the games. Don’t want to get into a fight inside the ground with a kid in tow.

Have done a couple of times, a bloke in the Fulwell giving Bennett grief after he f*cked up in a 6-pointer against Sheff Utd, he was with his young son calling him a black this and black that. Some other bloke next to me (I was 18 or 19 at the time) told me I best make a sharp exit but nowt else occurred.
Objected to a visiting Rangers fan sat behind me abusing Kevin Kyle calling him all the Fenian c*nts under the sun during that horrific 1-4 derby at SOL when Luque and Chopra scored? As it happens I've been called a Fenian c*nt myself more than once and it doesnt bother me, I think I was more motivated by being pissed and seeing us humped at home off them than by principle.
Brother and a mate got involved when some of our own were abusing a black steward in the queue at Stamford Bridge a few years back, once we got in the lads who'd been doing the abusing were sat a couple of rows behind us and were dishing out the threats in our direction. 4 of us mebbes 10 of them, so we fucked off at ht (already 2 down anyway iirc) and got pissed up West.
Not sure I'd pipe up these days without backup tbh, older I get the more aware of self preservation I am.

To shout racist abuse at a player and then say to a fellow black fan, "no mate, not you" is despicable on so many levels. If they're gonna be racist they could at least have the fuxking balls to stand by their convictions.

I hear both every game. Not always in the stadium it must be said, that is rarer now. But in the pub before & after when you are close enough to hear people’s conversations it pops up very regularly. I’ll usually react to that by giving them a glare to make them feel uncomfortable enough to know they’ve done something unacceptable or if it is somebody I’m with I’ll just leave an awkward silence in there and not respond before changing the subject. In the stadium however depending what has been said I’ve dealt with it in 2 ways, shouted back something like ‘shut up you backward cock, embarrassing’ or just gone and told a steward.
