Women’s Euros 2022

When I was a kid in the 70's I was so obsessed with football I would have watched any game any where any time
I was lucky enough that the first major tournament I saw was the 1974 world cup which will stay with me for the rest of my life
Whatever anyone says, Women's football will grow because of this tournament being televised and I don't see that as a bad thing
It isn't a bad thing and never will be. Grown blokes whinging about it is beyond pathetic and them saying it forced on the and rammed down their throats is tragic to the point where I'm starting to pity them

The coverage is absolutely nowhere near the men's game. Weapons grade nonsense
The Football Focus immediately after our Wembley match didn't mention us once. Over 72000 fans attend, Around 50,000 of those fans travelling the length of the country to get there. The scenes in Traf square with no trouble reported. What a great advert for the game.

Not a mention on Football Focus. They did, however, have a fifteen minute feature on a womens game which attracted 4,500 (iirc) and drooled over how "big" the womens game was becoming.

Disproportionate?

And I have zero interest in it. Rather watch Thornley Officials v Shotton Comrades.
Unfortunately for you, you're in the minority there.
Hence why there are numerous articles on the BBC website about England winning last night, and none about Shotton Comrades

Our game had great coverage. Does the 3rd tier of women's football get coverage?

Looking from the BBCs perspective, it is probably less about the BBC promoting Women's football and more about Women's football promoting the BBC.

The current average BBC viewer is approaching their pension. A symbiotic relationship with a growing sport with a young demographic might keep the institution relevant. Pandering to codgers with outdated world views clearly isn't working.

Televised sporting tournaments can turn unknowns into household names especially if the host nation does well
Anyone remember the bounce that that Men's Hockey got after the 1986 world cup held in England
The BBC cleared the schedules whenever England played (and remember there were only 4 channels then)
Imagine the outcry today if Eastenders was cancelled for a bunch of grown men playing a girl's game

Things move on - just a shame that attitudes don't

I said on another thread I've been supporting the Arsenal Women's team for over 20 years now. It's amazing to see the progress in the game since then. Arsenal led the way in this country in the women's game for so long and it's great to see there's now more competition.

Our women's team is a big part of the club. Alex Scott got a massive ovation from a full Emirates when she retired from the game. Our goal of the month competition features goals from both the men and women's team and in the last few months fans relegated Bukayo Saka's goal to 3rd place behind that of Beth Mead and Tobin Heath. Our women's team has over 400k followers on Twitter and this might surprise a few that it's not full of trolls.

As a Scot I'm very proud that one of our players is England captain (love Leah, she's Arsenal through and through - she was the mascot in one of our Champions League games the year we won it).

I genuinely hope England go on to win the Euros as our Arsenal lasses are class.
When did Arsenal win the Champions League?

Next year the BBC have committed to spending £8 million on rights to broadcast 18 WSL games. And £20 million for Champions League games.

Why did they pass up the opportunity to spend the £500,000 required to broadcast Championship, League One and Two highlights next season? That seems like a cheap price to me?
On the face of it, it sounds discriminatory.

It makes me chuckle thinking about how people think the BBC are showing it just for the sake of it, or an agenda.

TV is cut throat. If the public isn’t watching it, would BBC and Sky really be showing it?

No, I was asking who would win? And then commenting that I would hope that no one is saying that Nick Kyrgios is better than Serena. He is not, that was his first grand slam final, Serena has won 23!
Of course he is better. he would win 6-0, 6-0 every time they played.

he isn't as successful in the sport he is playing but they play in different categories. He is definitely better at tennis than Serena.
