Surely it's only selling out if they're making music they don't want to make just to make money?

I suppose that's the thing, we dont know if it's the band who is genuinely just maturing into a more commercial sound, or if they're being pushed by record companies to sell more records

Not a band but Calvin Harris did some decent collaborations early on but then sold out and has done some horrendous stuff recently.

I created disco was class seen him play it at titp. He went in a completely different direction after that

AFI, from punk to emo. Early stuff was class including a quality cover of the Missfits Halloween. UB40 has to be right at the top of bands on this thread mind, nice thread idea op, enjoyed reading through it.

FNM War Pigs cover is the best cover i've ever heard, NEARLY better than the original. I saw them at Rock City in 88, Just thought they'd end up more Punk/Funk than the juggernaut Rock outfit they've ended up. Not heard much over the last few years if im honest...ok strike them off the list...and James...and Michael Jackson

I wouldn't say sell out but REM became vastly more commercial.

It's a double edge sword - Nirvana became commercial despite the fact they never pursued commercial success from their grudge roots... Popularity goes hand in hand with commerciality....... All said and done, I hated 'shine happy people' by REM

i was just thinking of whitesnake. the turning point was saints and sinners, not a bad album but everything after isn't a patch on the early era of moody/marsden et al.

I was in the dentists on Thursday (I know look at me, I've got teeth) and it must have been album of the week on Radio 2.

Heard 2 songs and they were very good. Possibly the only good ones, but they were good.

The Beatles, started out a good covers band and sold out to commercialism

The Beatles actually did the reverse.
Started out with commercial stuff more or less echoing the Everly’s and Buddy Holly then within a few years we’re putting out stuff like Tomorrow Never Knows and a Day In The Life off Revolver and Sgt Peppers amongst others.
Yet they still sold, quite remarkable.

First time I've seen this thread done and no mention of the manic street preachers. Obviously there's a reason for there change in direction but the jump from the holy bible to everything must go and then all that comes after is surely worthy of mention.
