Genesis would be up in my top few but I think Roxy Music would be my first choice. Loved their first two albums but things went seriously downhill later.
Which band "sold out" the most from their early stuff.

depends what you mean by sold out? Did Metallica sell out by trying new things or were say Slayer the real sell outs by by sticking with the same straightforward Thrash sound for eg?
Nailed it. I was going to say Simple Minds but UB40 are a level above them in this regard, even down to there now being two versions of the band.

Don’t know if they sold out but Stereophonics first couple of releases were decent if hardly world changing but have since become as boring as fuck.
Good shout with SM,stadium rock,cheap U2 impressions.

I saw Steve Hackett at the Sage where he did the full Selling England By the Pound album and it was really good (acoustics at the Sage are wonderful mind) but I also really liked his solo recent stuff which he did.....bit of a Jazz vibe to it. Contrast that with the garbage Phil Collins served up solo.
Most of them just became not quite as good. Tricky still makes the odd really good album but has never really surpassed Maxinquaye.

Well thats more the Slayer type band or artist then. Those who were the innovators back in the day but are still making the same music or rather where till they retired

Ive seen a lot of people argue it the other way though. That they were the sell outs because they`d sold out their thrash roots by trying different stuff. Rather than accepting that throwing a bit of country vibes in like Mama Said, or even a bit of Shadows in with some of the stuff on the black album is just musical growth

They did release two new tracks. One of them they couldn't play live then they fell out again before they could go any further
