When Newcastle nearly won the League

We've had those threads before ....

..... this thread is about laughing at Newcastle throwing away a massive chance to win something in the last 60 years.

You mean the OXO period
Beef Stock
Chicken Stock
And
Laughing Stock

Ferguson definitely played a blinder in the psychology battle with Keegan.

Alex had him by the short & curlies for a good few weeks before, which arguably contributed to the failure. Alex has done that a few times over the years to get his team into position for success. Don't underestimate his role in Man U or Aberdeen's successes.

They did, they spent a fortune back then but deny it now

The whole thing has been airbrushed by the Mags as usual.

What actually happened is that Newcastle attempted to buy the title as Jack Walker did with Blackburn a couple of years before .

The profile was virtually identical .... high profile ex-Liverpool title winner, massive spend and a short term policy.

Keegan could've pulled it off but Man Utd easily did the double over them and toppled the fragile house of cards.

It wasn't just mind games with Ferguson .... Keegan lost the games against the eventual champions home and away.

Even the idea that Newcastle threw caution to the wind and outscored everyone is fake .... they only scored 2 more than Everton in 6th.

Liverpool, who finished 3rd, lost less games.

Does anybody underestimate his role?

He was a brilliant manager

Do you reckon that could be the best team ever to not win anything? Got some trophies among them for ther clubs an arl. God that must have hurt! Like Kelly brook letting you pull her knickers down only for her to pull them back up and say "I'd love it....LOVE IT! if we could just be best friends in the whole world!":lol:

Some people don't fully understand his methods but how he did things worked very well over lots of years against various other managers

He knew his football but more importantly he also knew people.

Man management and also mind games he was an expert at. He had Keegan round his little finger when the mags should have won the title.

They didn't though as we all know

Don't think anybody does really, he was the master of football phsycology, a very clever man. By tapping his watch on the sidelines, he used to get into the heads of opponents and referees, thus giving Manchester United a psychological advantage.

Would still be a good experience to get that close. I'd always have the memories and dreaming of what if... haha.

Was looking for somewhere to fit in Batty, Ferdinand, Cole and one or two others I rated highly.

Dunno about easy like Riv. They battered Man U at Sid James from what I remember. Thank god for Schmichael and Cantona.

'Free scoring Newcastle' didn't manage a singe goal against United ..... if they'd scored Ferguson wouldn't stepped it up.

Keegan thought all out attack was the way to win games but he was taught a lesson.

It’s fuckin great that after all these years it still gets their backs up. I have never been a Man Utd lover but they certainly made a massive impression on me that season. So close yet so far :lol::lol::lol:.

Love it marra

The "Entertainers" scored fewer goals than Man U & Liverpool, only 2 more than Everton and 5 more than Blackburn.

You'd think they'd scored 100+ goals the way they go on about that team

With 125 goals scored/conceded it was actually Wimbledon who should take that title that season

The most entertaining thing about them was blowing that 12 point lead

I'll admit I shed a year

In a good way. I wonder what that old fella they used to carry around the country, Stevie Charlton iirc felt about it all?

When the camera zoomed in he just looked on in total confusion.

From memory Newcastle's 2nd top scorer was Rob Lee with 7 or 8 ...... Asprilla, who was supposed to be 'on fire' only got 2 or 3.

They had their chance and it failed

Safc had our chance being second up to the end of January and we failed.

It would appear it will be a long time before both of us, ever get into those positions again.

A cup win is about the limit and we've had a chance of that a couple of times this century.

I not sure but I don't think nufc have reached a semi final in the 2000s in domestic football?

The hotbed of football is well and truly cooling down
