My dad says that was the turning point, and the best ever journey he had from up north to back south.

Not really..they had a massive Monday night game at home to Man Utd they lost 1-0..that was the real turning point..after that they lost 3 out of the next 4..the Liverpool game was a sickener for them because they were leading twice..i watched it in the bar of the Blue Bell..proper scenes when Collymore got the winner..fair play to the mags that season mind they were great to watch.

Ah well there must have been a few turning points to squander a 12 point lead.

If they'd beat Man Utd on that Monday night then they 'probably' would have won it but it just seemed to sap the confidence from them..Keegan was criticised for not playing a bit more defensively whilst they had the big points lead but that was just how they played..everyone knows about the Liverpool game but the Blackburn game was a right sickener for them losing 2-1 and a mag..Graham Fenton scoring 2 in the last 5 minutes was fkn hilarious.

This thread is about Newcastle blowing their only chance of winning the title you'll ever see.

Not by a fluke result, a debatable penalty or goal difference ...... they had the title wrapped up and blew it

As a Sunderland supporter you have to see how funny that is.

It was hilarious, they'll never get a better chance of winning the title

I was of an age where I experienced the whole thing in sharp detail, not least because I have Mag relatives.

To be closing in on the title and leading by 12 points in January, with only around 16 games left, was incredible.

If they'd been pipped at the post and missed out on GD, or the odd point, it would've been cruel but honourable.

The fact they missed out by, effectively, 5 points was a collapse on a truly hilarious level.

Was a pretty good season on the whole, especially considering we almost went into the 3rd division just 4 years earlier.

If you lot stay up this season, that could be you in just 4 years. Dare to dream.

Being fair
Pick a Sunderland Newcastle stating 11
Players over the 20 years. 1996 to 2016

It looked almost a formality that they were going to win the title they were so far in front. The Liverpool game at Anfield kind of summed up their season, they were scoring goals for fun but just couldn't stop the opposition scoring more. Massive meltdown.

We've had those threads before ....

..... this thread is about laughing at Newcastle throwing away a massive chance to win something in the last 60 years.

TBF Liverpool scored more and conceded less .... Man Utd scored more and only conceded 2 less than Newcastle.

The fact is Keegan fucked up because he was way behind Ferguson in every way.

Keegan was a fantastic motivator but when it came to the crunch he was clueless when it came to tactics. He accepted this himself when his England side was beaten at Wembley by Germany And he threw the towel in.

Ferguson definitely played a blinder in the psychology battle with Keegan.
