What is the point in Trai Hume?

I always thought he was overrated as some were talking like he was going to end up playing for a top 6 Premier League side but he's still a good championship fullback and when you're constantly left on your own with no help from the winger or a defensive midfielder then you're going to struggle.
But it's not often a case of him being left alone. It's the fact that he's going missing. As I keep saying, whether it's the role or the player, it needs stopping.

It’s the role.

But I think he should play CB.

He showed for me that this is his best position in the run-in last year. Not least as the man tasked with standing up to the Luton barrage.

Assuming no signings/sales - I would focus a lot of the off-season switching him to centre-back and coaching Luke to be an option as a DM again.

A back four next year of: Huggins, Hume, Ballard, Cirkin would be a big improvement if we can get it on the pitch.

Think I read somewhere Huggins isn't expected back before January.

Was better last season when he had better players around him (there's a shock) i.e. linking up with Roberts & Amad

It stinks of the coach trying to make a name for himself been a forward thinking young dynamic coach with new ideas , it doesn’t work it’s ridiculous your plugging gaps in midfield but the other team is exploiting your right side as he’s out of position it only works if you have all the possession and never give the ball away we don’t do that. We are over complicating trying to get championship players playing like cancelo or zivchenko their heads are battered

I'd like to think so. As I've said many times, I like the lad. (I may have been harsh in the OP ).

It pains me to say it (and there was a time I never thought it would), but I think we need to improve on Luke O'Nien and reduce his game time.

I don't think Huggins is due back in that timescale. I'm sure they were talking 12 months plus, and that was only December.
Such an unneeded and poor thread

We have a core of players who are keeping the club afloat, who are young and never get injured and always play

Hume, Neil, Patto, Clarke until one injury, Ballard ti an extent

To call out any of them is madness, they are a credit to the club

And been totally let down my our signings and managerial appointments

Young players make mistakes. I see people above analyzing our goals on Monday, shock. A 21 year old makes a mistake, how about signing some players older than him?
I just don't see why some players are seeming beyond reproach - Hume, and the likes of Neil and Patto especially - yet for others it's fair game - Ekwah, Ba, Jobe, any of the strikers. These are young players as well - with less game time in their legs than the aforementioned untouchables.

Queer lot our fans. Certainly have their favourites.

Correct.

No, I'm asking what's the point in us doing that - it doesn't work. it hasn't all season. He doesn't plug any gaps in midfield, and when he's wayward he's leaving gaping big holes at right back.
It doesn’t work because the gap he’s plugging is the size of a Pierre Ekwah type of performance, he’s plugging a gap the size of our entire half! Down to poor management really!

Ekwah is the biggest problem in our side, replace him and give Dan Neil an actual CM to play alongside and you’ll see a huge difference in my opinion.

Ekwahs and talented player been criminally misused he’s not a deep lying play maker like he’s been forced to do

At one point he was on the left wing trying to support Mundle, it wasn't as if it was just after a set piece. It was just normal open play and he ended up as far away from right back as he possibly could be.
To be honest that's as much a coaching/managing issue as it is his. The back four are supposed to play as a unit and it's hard to do that when players are 60 yards away from their actual position. Onien loves running out of central defence and missing a challenge 20/30 yards away from where he should be as well.
One massive positive you get from Hume is he consistently plays and he's usually ok in most games, we can't stay that about many of our other fullbacks

Not sure I agree with that. Unfair on the lad. He wasn't the problem in the home defeats to Cardiff, Boro and Huddersfield.

Same as Patterson. Mentally overrated and gets away with from criticism as a result regularly, particularly on here. Partly to do with being a local no doubt.

Half decent shot stopper in the championship but that’s it.

Never in a million years a Prem level keeper.

Never understood the hype for him ever.

Appalling in most other aspects of his game as a mode

Then what is he? He’s definitely not a defensive minded player either and I struggle to see anything that would say he’s a number 10 type. Mowbray once said he had to be more aggressive, he was until his injury, now he’s a waste of a shirt!

It’s the system not the player. Hume is a brilliant right back at this level and unfortunately full backs will gets turned at times, it doesn’t make them a bad player.
