Durham Miners' Association statement:

It has come to our attention that a video is being circulated on social media purporting to show the police escorting people from the Gala for flying the British flag. This claim is completely false.

This was a group of activists from the far-right group “For Britain” who did not receive permission to march and were seeking to disrupt the proceedings and hijack the Big Meeting for their divisive, racist agenda. Therefore, the police took the decision to escort them from the racecourse for their own safety.

The Durham Miners’ Gala is now and has always been, a celebration of trade unionism, unity and internationalism.

We ask people not to be fooled by those who drape themselves in the British flag but who are in truth, promoting a far-right, extremist agenda.

Not read the full thread, but they were pulled because they were wearing far-Right insignias on their clothing and were warned politely by Police that they didn't have the resources to hand to protect them if things went south due to their own provocative actions. They left of their own accord with their tails between their legs after that.

There will have also been the issue of marches and assemblies have to be proposed in advance and the chief police officer for that area informed in writing 7 days in advance. Doubt this was done by the little englanders who were out protesting on mine and everyone else on heres behalf

It’s absolutely pointless though. Calling people that will not change their political viewpoint it’ll only reinforce it. I’ve always thought once someone has to resort to name calling then they’ve lost.

It depends if you want to change their minds though.
I don't tend to call people names based on their identity that they don't themselves but I call out fascists for what they are. I don't call fascists twats because I want them to change their minds, as I know that's not going to happen. I call them twats because I want them and others to know I think their views are the views of twats because if they're allowed to spread unopposed then the worse things people can do to each other becomes acceptable because their views enable that.
