I hitch-hiked with him to Preston in the mid-seventies for a mid-week league cup game - Combover Charlton was their boss at the time!
1974 - before our game at Millwall, we were dropped off at Euston Station 7:00AM and walked in on a couple of hundred of Man U fans, who were crashed out after coming down on the overnight train, Sammy said (pretty loud) something along the lines of not too worry as they'll think we are Man U too as we've got the same scarfs (the red white & black ones). I think they probably heard him in Kings Cross...
As we came back out they charged us down those stairs at the side - some nasty injuries. We were dispersed and didn't 'regroup' till it kicked off at The Den.
I heard a similar story but that he was in Thornley Close club
