The Hundred - Free tickets

How exactly? Accessible 70 miles away for the 16.4. And AllStars has been around for years. Kids taste but few stay. It's the way it is.

Have answered the thing about the 70 miles up the thread. It didn’t make a difference to me and my mates as kids, what was on the telly did.

Will try and leave this argument now as it’s going around in circles again...

That’s an easy one. They were bribed.
It's not only that, the relationship between the ECB and counties has become one-sided and abusive. They've neglected the county game so badly, and for so long, we are dependent on England TV money to keep the game afloat. They even tell us when we can and can't pick our own players. Can you imagine the FA carrying on the way they do?

Might have been said already but they’ve sold far more tickets than expected and are on course to make a comfortable profit ( numbers wise I can’t remember but I think it was big - maybe 10million) in their first year.

I think it’s a load of shite personally but I’ve got access to a lot of the games through the company (we’ve got multiple artists performing via BBC Introducing) and will probably go to Lords at the very least. Sacrilegious as it is.

Yeah I'm aware we were given some money but it wasn't clear how much.

I'm more interested to know who is paying the wages of Raine, Potts, Carse, Franlin and Killeen for the next few weeks.
Of the money the players get from the 100, 12.5% goes to their County side. Large chunks of what is left will be taken by the Government, courtesy of HMRC.
Sorry, got that wrong. The players give up 12.5% of their County salary. Then HMRC step in.

Final say -Pretty good summary of the situation which few could argue with.

Not sure which article that is supposed to link to but any argument which depends on the Daily Mail for evidence is doomed to failure.

Phew. The article is by Lawrence Booth who has been editor of Wisden for 10 years so I think he's knowledgeable about cricket , highly respected by most who follow the game. Given that Hussein, Bumble and Paul Newman all write for the Mail should give it credence on cricket coverage.
click on sport, then cricket leads to the article.

chairmen is one thing, but players? national media? i can't believe that. i suppose it's plausible there was some kind of NDA/gagging order tied into those payments eg to county telling them to make sure none of their employees publically criticise, same with broadcasters.

it all stinks

sorry, but are you suggesting that we still pay their wages, except the 12.5% ?! thats a pittance as far as compensation if so

You've linked the front page of the Daily Mail, not any article about the 16.4. Thanks for that.

Headlines are: Immigrants, scantily clad teenage girls, Megan Markle - Jesus that paper is a shit rag for cretins.

I've been saying that for years. The whole system is absolutely rotten to be honest.

Sorry like, but I don't believe that they've sold a lot of tickets or that profit number. Have you got a source for it?

I do know that none of the games at Old Trafford are nowhere near sold out, or even half sold out. Even with the mass giveaways and free ticket offers.

those cricket correspondents certainly aren't cretins and if the readrship are cretins that's worrying given its readership figures.
But chill out, it's only an update on Hundred sales.

I know. It's a very sad state of affairs when a rag that relies on right wing propaganda and barely legal titillation to fill it's front pages sells so much, regardless of any redeeming features. Any chance of the article though?

Behind the paywall but pulled out the part in question below...

I think they'd struggle to tell such a barefaced lie in a national newspaper like.

The pandemic has obviously had an impact on the appetite of people to return to spectator events but the ECB reports advance ticket sales of more than 350,000, exceeding expectations. “We’re going to generate £50 million revenue in year one,” Patel said. “That’s phenomenal for a new tournament. Costs will be about £39 million. Of that, 60 per cent goes back into paying players, coaches and venues, so that is still fuelling the cricket economy. To make £10 million profit in the first year . . . only the IPL made a profit and they sold franchises. The Big Bash ran at a loss for five years.”

Ta. That is some claims they are making and I don't believe them, will be interesting to see.

I reckon they're bending the truth more than a wee bit about the number of tickets "sold" - counting freebies taken up as part of that 350k.

The £50 million revenue might be right like. The TV deals with Sky and the Beeb are probably worth a quid or two. And with international talent not taking part, the expected costs of wages into players hands has likely dropped a fair bit, lending itself to a decent profit. £10m doesn't seem out of the question. Semantics, mind. Be nice to see someone digging a bit deeper into those claims.

i think you're giving the general public too much credit

i'm aware that might make me sound very arrogant. let me provide some evidence, exhibit A : Love Isand

Click on the link, then to "sport" link at top then "cricket" on the dropdown. It's a very balanced article imo.
Obviously the only way to judge "sales" is when you view the actual game. Reliable sources report London venues are "sold out"",provinces 50% plus, which copies T20 following.
Attendances at both forms are weather dependant, as with most summer sports.

I can't believe they have used up all the reserves of cash they had hoarded on a truly risky and pointless endeavour

i mean you say that but....no wait, you're right. there really is no defense whatsoever for the very board designed to protect the future & present of cricket to piss it into the wind
