The idea of sustainability I completely agreed with. Their efforts in achieving it I totally did not. Far too slash and burn and has ultimately done long term damage to the club. The truth of the matter is that their implementation of sustainability was 'slash all costs, dispose of anything that doesn't immediately help us in order to lash together a senior squad that can get us up'. A high risk, short term strategy that, true to form, they bungled. If they'd gone for genuine sustainability (ironically the sort that Speakman is now talking about) they'd have fared much better - both financially and probably in terms of results too. So, while I think identifying sustainability was the right move, their understanding of what it actually means never went deeper than 'I don't want to put any money in'.
