The biggest problem of Donald and Methven was always the on pitch issues. I don't think many people had a problem with them trying to make the club self sustainable. So now that we know Speakman is making all football decisions, I'm not as concerned about the background men as I was. Ideally they would still all fuck off, or at the very least Charlie, but it doesn't concern me that Rodwell is running the business side of things or particularly that Donald is in the background.
A problem is how they've spoken about people up here. Irs a massive issue which will not be forgotten hy many

The idea of sustainability I completely agreed with. Their efforts in achieving it I totally did not. Far too slash and burn and has ultimately done long term damage to the club. The truth of the matter is that their implementation of sustainability was 'slash all costs, dispose of anything that doesn't immediately help us in order to lash together a senior squad that can get us up'. A high risk, short term strategy that, true to form, they bungled. If they'd gone for genuine sustainability (ironically the sort that Speakman is now talking about) they'd have fared much better - both financially and probably in terms of results too. So, while I think identifying sustainability was the right move, their understanding of what it actually means never went deeper than 'I don't want to put any money in'.

I think, ultimately, they were too thick to do anything other than what they tried. No-one will convince me otherwise.

This is why I have high confidence that the change in direction at the club has very little to do with them whatsoever. I simply don't believe they're clever enough to think of it. Their egos are certainly big enough for them to want to get some reflected glory, mind. But even in that they're too dense to realise that their public association with anything to do with SAFC is a very real barrier to success.

There’s no reflected glory for them now. Any upturn will be attributed to KnJ both inside the game and out. Every club owner knows safc should’ve gone up first time. There must be sniggering as soon as they enter a board room all ower the land.

Undoubtedly. Don't think Donald's titanic ego will allow him to sit back and wait for the money, though.

I agree marra. They are, without doubt, idiots.

I think that I would have preferred it if dear old Ken Bates had taken over SAFC rather than these two morons . (Do you know that Kenneth was 89 years young a few days ago and apparently he's still living in Monaco? I believe that he may very well last forever).

Hmm. It’s very easy to get all emotive about the two chancers what with the state of the club and all. But I think it’s fair to say that while the decisions they’ve made reflect poorly on them, and they’ve clearly bullshitted a great deal, these two aren’t idiots. They both ran highly successful businesses and seem to have fooled a lot of people into thinking they were the best people to own Sunderland AFC.

Wankers maybe. But not idiots.

Whatever people think of Donald, and I share the same reservations about his time as majority shareholder, it can only be a good thing if all of the shareholders (or the "ownership group") are pulling in the same direction. He would have no real authority with 20% but this is a much better scenario than having him kicking off in the background. The manager needs to feel comfortable with this too which he seems to.

We all want SD and CM out of the club but if this year has focused minds with JS and KLD that has to be a positive development.

If they keep their gobs shut, people will probably get over the fact they’re still here. I doubt it though, certainly in CM’s case.

I’m not really bothered either way as long as we see a change on the pitch.

Define success... is it playing attractive football in a league above or is it winning promotion from league 2 or league 1? Would you say Brendan Rodgers has a track record for success? He’s won nothing bar some titles with a Celtic team that wins the league every year.
Not this season by the looks of it.
They fault was always Donald thinking him Methven and Fox could do it like playing football manager when he should have had an experienced football man appointed and making decisions. All they succeeded in doing is making themselves look like arrogant fools
At least they made a good job of that.

No real sign of business success from Charlie boy. And Donald inherited his businesses. From everything I've heard them say publicly, there's not too much evidence of real adaptable intelligence from either of them
