Sunderland railway station.

Was in town yesterday and noticed that virtually all of the structure is gone. That’s more work than has ever been done in my lifetime as previously they just rolled the turd in a small amount of glitter.

The station should have been at park lane to link into other public transport

The station was built in 1879 when there was , virtually , no other public transport and it is served by Middlesbrough trains which cannot stop at Park Lane. The logical thing would have been to have a bus station next to the railway station and the old bus station came close to that ideal but it was thrown away in favour of more shops. Until it was demolished in 1966 the station had taxi ranks at both the north and south ends.

Here's a photo of the station just after Adolf's bomb went through the roof

Did the Station face onto Fawcett Street? Or was a different building between the town hall and the building that is now NatWest Bank?

Station didn't face into FS.

Just trying to see what the low level building is on that image next to town hall. Looks like an odd infill on such a grand street. That might have been the replacement building after the bomb hit in all honesty.

The logical thing would have been to develop Monkwearmouth, all the land is available on the sheepfolds side could have created an interchange extend the platforms into St Peters, as the lifts are there for disabled access.
New Bridge about to be built giving better access into the town.
But lets just keep throwing money at the hole in the ground.

Reading library apparently. Before my time.

As said earlier it was apparently a library.

Used to have copies of the daily papers in there. Moved to the library on Borough Road when that was demolished along with the town hall.
Remember the reading room in Kayll Road. Full of old blokes reading the print off the newspapers and getting a free warm to boot.

I can remember one at the junction of Hylton Road and Palgrove Road in Pennywell. Used to double as a polling station on election days.

Why didn’t it get a nice one like Darlington or Newcastle?

The main problem with the station is the fact that the space above it is covered in shops which means whatever the entrances look like, the platform area is always going to look like an underground car park. If they ever bit the bullet and fucked the shops off they could build a modern overall glazed roof and it would look great. As I probably have mentioned here before, when it was rebuilt for the Metro it was originally intended to make it 4 separate platforms as it used to be but they went for cheapness and ruined it. It can never be like it was but every freaking time they rebuild it they try to save money and make it worse.
